Getting started
Is 4Search free?
Yes. Searching costs nothing, and there is no subscription. The company behind 4Search, 4Internet, LLC, explains in its policies how the site is supported: some shopping links are affiliate links, so it may earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you, and it offers advertising and data services to businesses. See the Affiliate Disclosure and Services.
Is there an account or a sign-in?
No. You can search and use every tab without signing in. Lists you choose to save, such as followed topics, stay in your browser when you allow Saved preferences. See Saved preferences.
Which company is behind 4Search?
Which sites are in the network?
The footer's The 4 Network section lists the featured sites in subject groups, from sports to cities to health, and the full network is larger. See The 4 Network.
Can I use 4Search on my phone?
Yes. It works in your phone's browser, and the layout adapts to the screen. You can also add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. See 4Search on your phone.
Where can I get help or report a problem?
Start with this Help Center and its troubleshooting guides. To reach the team, open Menu › Contact; choose Accessibility there to report a barrier. See Contact support.
Does 4Search work with my screen reader?
It uses standard links, buttons, headings and landmarks, which screen readers handle. The statement says assistive technology support is a goal for current versions of the major browsers and commonly used tools. If something does not read correctly, report it so it can be fixed.
From the guide Accessibility: keyboard, screen reader, zoom and motion
Can I make the text larger?
Yes. Use your browser's zoom, or the text size settings of your device. Pinch to zoom works on a phone.
From the guide Accessibility: keyboard, screen reader, zoom and motion
Can I turn off the changing tagline?
Not on the page itself. If your device is set to reduce motion, the change has no fade.
From the guide Accessibility: keyboard, screen reader, zoom and motion
Why do I not see Finance, Weather or Maps?
Those services run only on some sites, such as 4Search and 4Conservative. On other sites the tabs are not shown. See Which sites have which services.
From the guide Choose the right tab
What is the difference between All, Web and News?
All blends web and news results and adds the AI Overview. Web leads with web results. News leads with news articles and offers the full set of filters. For most searches, All is the right place to begin.
From the guide Choose the right tab
My search changed tabs by itself. Why?
4Search guesses from your words which tab fits best and tells you at the top of the page. Select See all results instead to go back to All.
From the guide Choose the right tab
Where did the Topics tab go on a site I use?
The Topics tab appears only on sites that have topics. Most sites do. If yours does not, browse from the home page instead.
From the guide Choose the right tab
Why did my search open the News tab instead of All?
4Search looks at your words and, when it is fairly sure they are about news, shopping or a website, it takes you to that tab and says so at the top. Select See all results instead to run the same search on All.
From the guide Run your first search
Why are there no results from the last few days?
Check the date menu. On Auto the window depends on your search; choose a longer period such as 90 days or All to look further back.
From the guide Run your first search
Do I have to allow AI answers to search?
No. Search results, filters, tabs and topics work without AI. Only the AI Overview and AI Mode depend on your choice.

From the guide A five-minute tour of the home page
I do not see the topics list. Where is it?
On a phone or a narrow window, the list is hidden to leave room for the page. Select the Topics button, which sits under the introduction on the home page and in the top bar on results pages. See 4Search on your phone.
From the guide A five-minute tour of the home page

Searching
Why do I see two lists of results?
One list is the 4Search index of articles (News), the other is Google-hosted web results (Web). They answer the same search from different places. See The Web column.
Can I search for an exact phrase?
Yes. Put it in quotes. The Web column reads quotes on any tab. For the News column, also choose a (Text) option in the match menu. See Meaning, text or both.
How do I search only one website?
For web pages, add site: and the address, such as heat pump site:energy.gov. For articles, select the outlet's name on a result card, or choose Search this website in its three-dot menu. See Google-style operators.
How do I find older articles?
Choose a longer range in the date menu: 365 days, 2 years or All. Typing a year such as 2019 does not set the date. See Choose a time window.
How do I see only the latest news?
Choose 24 hours or 1 hour in the date menu, or add today to your search. See Choose a time window.
Why are my results different today from yesterday?
New articles arrive all the time, and on Auto the window is chosen afresh with every search. See How 4Search finds and orders results.
Do I need special commands to search well?
No. Plain words and whole questions work. Capitalize names, and add a time phrase such as last week when age matters. See The search box and suggestions.
What is the difference between Full coverage and a new search?
Full coverage searches with an article's own headline, by meaning, so it finds other reports of that story. A new search uses your words. See Full coverage and Related Coverage.
Why are some results from Google?
The Web column on a results page shows results from Google's search service, beside results from 4Search's own index. The policies treat Google-hosted results as an essential part of the search service, which is why they stay on when you reject optional features. Loading them sends your search to Google. See Google search results and your privacy.
Why are the results different from other search engines?
4Search ranks with the words you typed and with meaning, and also considers freshness, the source and a structured set of topics. It shows the news in its own column, starts the date filter on Auto so recent coverage comes first, and lets you search inside a topic. The web column is Google's, so you can compare. See Searching.
Why do I mostly see recent articles?
The date filter starts on Auto, which picks a recent window for most searches, such as Auto (30 days). Choose a longer period, up to All, in the first menu of the filter row to look further back. See Run your first search.
Why did my search go to a different tab?
4Search guesses from your words whether you want news, shopping results or websites, and takes you there with a note at the top. Select See all results instead to stay on All. See Choose the right tab.
Why did a card not appear for my search?
Cards appear only for searches that clearly ask for them, on the first page, and on sites that have the service. Try the wording in the table, or open the service's tab.
From the guide What appears above your results
Can I hide the cards?
The cards appear with the search that calls for them. Scroll past them to the results, or search from a tab that has none, such as Images.
From the guide What appears above your results
Do the cards change the results below?
No. The results are the same with or without a card.
From the guide What appears above your results
Why did my search open the News tab?
Your words looked like a news search, often because outlets are covering the subject right now. Select See all results instead for the All tab.
From the guide Why a search opens on News, Shopping or Websites
Can I stop it from happening?
Search from the tab you want, or use See all results instead. Adding an operator also keeps the search on All.
From the guide Why a search opens on News, Shopping or Websites
Does 4Search change my results when it picks a tab?
It changes which tab you see first. Your words are the same, and every other tab is still one click away.
From the guide Why a search opens on News, Shopping or Websites
Why does Auto show a number of days?
It tells you the window it chose for this search, so you can see how far back you are looking.
From the guide Choose a time window
Can I search a particular year or month?
Not by typing a date. The menu offers ranges counting back from now. Choose All and add words that name the event.
From the guide Choose a time window
I typed a time phrase and nothing changed. Why?
Phrases work only on Auto. They also need to be one that is understood, such as last week. A year like 2019 is not.
From the guide Choose a time window
Does the date also filter the Web results?
Only on the All tab, with Apply to web ticked. See The Web column.
From the guide Choose a time window
Does Full coverage always find the same story from other outlets?
It lists the reports in the index whose headlines are closest in meaning. When other outlets covered the story they usually appear. When none did, you see articles on similar subjects. Use the topic menu to narrow the list.
From the guide Full coverage and Related Coverage
Why is the article I started from first?
Its headline matches itself best. Read past it for other outlets' reports.
From the guide Full coverage and Related Coverage
How do I get back to my original search?
Use the Back button in your browser. A Full coverage search is a new search, so your earlier filters are not carried into it.
From the guide Full coverage and Related Coverage
Why is an older article above a newer one?
It matched your words better. Age only decides between articles that match about equally well.
From the guide How 4Search finds and orders results
Why did 4Search show me something from months ago?
On Auto, a clearly better match from further back can appear, and slow-moving subjects such as health use a longer window. Choose a shorter range in the date menu to see only recent articles.
From the guide How 4Search finds and orders results
Can I make 4Search sort by date?
There is no sort menu. Choose a short range such as 24 hours to see only the newest articles, or type a time phrase such as today. See Choose a time window.
From the guide How 4Search finds and orders results
Why are there only ten pages?
A search lists about a hundred matches. Narrow the search with filters or more specific words to bring different articles forward.
From the guide How 4Search finds and orders results
Why is there no Web column on Images and Videos?
These tabs show media from articles in the 4Search index only.
From the guide Search images and videos
Why did a video open a news site instead of playing?
4Search plays a video on the card only when the article offers a file it can play. Otherwise it sends you to the article.
From the guide Search images and videos
Where does the image count come from?
It is how many matches 4Search found for your search, up to a limit. You can page through only the first few pages of them.
From the guide Search images and videos
What is the difference between Published and Discovered?
Published uses the article's own date. Discovered uses the day 4Search found it. See above.
From the guide Narrow results with filters
Why did my results disappear after I set a filter?
No article matched every filter together. Loosen the length or sentiment setting first.
From the guide Narrow results with filters
Do the filters change the Web results?
Only the date on the All tab, with Apply to web ticked. See The Web column.
From the guide Narrow results with filters
Can I filter by site or by topic?
Yes, with Search this website on a result card, the topic menu of Full coverage, or the Websites tab. See Full coverage and Related Coverage and Find a website.
From the guide Narrow results with filters
Why does the News column ignore site:?
Operators are Google commands for web pages. The 4Search index has its own way to search one outlet: Search this website on a result card.
From the guide Google-style operators
Do I need operators to search well?
No. Plain words and questions work. Operators are for when you need the Web column narrowed precisely.
From the guide Google-style operators
Why did my operator do nothing?
Check there is no space after the colon, and that a date after after: or before: looks like 2026, 2026-10 or 2026-10-01. Google may also ignore some operators.
From the guide Google-style operators
Can I combine operators?
Yes. inflation site:bls.gov filetype:pdf after:2025 combines four.
From the guide Google-style operators
Is 4Search the same as Google?
No. The News column comes from the 4Search index, which compares meanings rather than only matching words. The Web column is Google-hosted, so those results look like web results you may know.
From the guide Searching on 4Search
Do I need to type special words to get good results?
No. Plain words and full questions work. Operators such as site: are optional extras, explained in Google-style operators.
From the guide Searching on 4Search
Why do my results look different from a friend's?
Results depend on the words, the tab, the filters and the day. New articles arrive constantly, and the date menu may widen or narrow its window. See How 4Search finds and orders results.
From the guide Searching on 4Search
Can I sort results by date?
There is no sort menu. Narrow the date window to keep only recent articles; within a short window the newest of equally good matches comes first.
From the guide Order and pages of results
Why does the last page have fewer than ten results?
The list ends there. A search lists about a hundred matches.
From the guide Order and pages of results
Why did Next move the Web column too?
The buttons move both columns at once so they stay on the same page.
From the guide Order and pages of results
Why does a card have no picture?
Not every article has one, and a picture that fails to load is removed. The card still works the same way.
From the guide Read a result card
Why does a card have no tone bar?
Tone is an automatic estimate and not every article has one. When you filter by sentiment, articles without a tone are left out.
From the guide Read a result card
What do the words mean in "1,535 words"?
The length of the article text that 4Search indexed. Hover over the number to see Length of the indexed text.
From the guide Read a result card
Why does a card show an old date?
The age is when the article was published. On Auto, an older article can appear when it matches your search better than newer ones. See Choose a time window.
From the guide Read a result card
Can I see how many outlets cover a story?
Front-page story cards show that count. On a search results page, use Full coverage on a card to list other outlets' reports.
From the guide Read a result card
Why did pressing Enter not search?
If a suggestion was highlighted, Enter chose it. Press Enter again to search.
From the guide The search box and suggestions
How do I type a new line?
Press Shift + Enter. The line break is turned into a space when you search.
From the guide The search box and suggestions
Why do I see suggestions for things 4Search does not cover?
Suggestions are general completions of what you have typed so far, not a list of what is in the index.
From the guide The search box and suggestions
Is there a limit to how long a search can be?
The box accepts long text. On the News and Websites tabs, searches over 160 characters leave out the Web column. See The Web column.
From the guide The search box and suggestions
What is the difference between All, Web and News?
All shows both columns with filters for News. Web shows both columns with Web first and no filters. News shows News first with the full filter row.
From the guide The search tabs
Why does the All tab sometimes take me back to News?
For a search that looks like news, selecting All can run the same check again and reopen News. Select See all results instead in the note at the top and the All tab stays. See Why a search opens on News, Shopping or Websites.
From the guide The search tabs
Why do my filters disappear when I change tabs?
Tabs carry your words, not your filter choices. Set the filters again on the new tab.
From the guide The search tabs
Where are the other tabs, like Finance and Weather?
They are part of the same row. On a narrow screen, slide the row sideways. Each is a service with its own section of this Help Center.
From the guide The search tabs
Why do Web results and News results differ?
They come from different places. The Web column is Google's list of pages. The News column is 4Search's own index of articles, matched by meaning. See How 4Search finds and orders results.
From the guide The Web column
Can I make Web results show only one site?
Yes. Add site: and the address to your words, for example heat pump site:energy.gov. To search one site's articles in the News column, use Search this website on a result card. See Google-style operators.
From the guide The Web column
Why is there no Web column on Images and Videos?
Those tabs show pictures and videos from articles only. Use All, Web or News for the Web column.
From the guide The Web column
Why does a Web result have a Full coverage button?
To connect the web with the news. It searches the 4Search index for articles with a headline similar to that page's title.
From the guide The Web column
Why is a website I know missing from the Websites tab?
The directory does not list every site, and it matches descriptions better than exact names. Try describing the site's subject, or search for its address with site: in the Web column. See Google-style operators.
From the guide Find a website and read its profile
What does "pages indexed" mean?
How many pages of the site 4Search has in its index. It is not the size of the whole site.
From the guide Find a website and read its profile
How do I leave the profile?
Select Clear site filter to run your search on every site again.
From the guide Find a website and read its profile
Is the profile a rating of the site?
No. It describes what the site publishes. It does not judge accuracy or quality.

AI answers
Should I use the AI Overview or AI Mode?
Use the AI Overview for a quick summary while you search; it appears above the results by itself. Use AI Mode when you want to ask follow-up questions or see which articles an answer is based on. Under the overview, Dive deeper in AI Mode takes your search there. See AI answers on 4Search.
Does 4Search send my searches to an AI company?
Only if you allow AI-assisted answers. Then your search words, or your AI Mode messages, and a few related results go to the provider named on the AI Transparency Notice. With AI answers off, nothing goes to the AI provider. See Turn AI answers on or off.
Can AI answers replace reading the articles?
No. They are a starting point. AI answers can be wrong or out of date; open the sources, compare with the results, and rely on qualified professionals for health, money, legal or safety questions.
Why does the AI sometimes get it wrong?
An AI overview is text written by an AI system from your words and excerpts of the results. Systems like this can misread a source, leave out what matters, state a guess as a fact or rely on out-of-date knowledge, and they sound confident either way. Every overview carries a note saying it may be incomplete or incorrect and should not be relied on as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. Check the sources and compare with the results below it. See AI Overview.
Do I have to use the AI features?
No. AI answers are optional and start off. Without them, search results, filters, tabs and topics work as usual. The AI Overview box then offers Allow AI Answers if you change your mind. See AI answers.
Which AI company writes the answers?
The AI Transparency Notice names the provider the site is using.
From the guide Accuracy, limits and your privacy
Does 4Search use my questions to decide what I see?
No. The results are the same with AI answers on or off, and 4Search does not use AI answers to make decisions about you.
From the guide Accuracy, limits and your privacy
Is my AI Mode chat saved on 4Search?
The conversation itself lives in your browser tab and disappears when you close it. 4Search may keep a record of each message you sent, as described above.
From the guide Accuracy, limits and your privacy
Can I use AI answers and still keep my searches private?
Your searches reach 4Search either way, as any search does. With AI answers off, nothing about them goes to the AI provider.
From the guide Accuracy, limits and your privacy
Why does it say Answer 1 of 10 when the counter says 2 / 10?
The label counts the answers on screen; the counter counts the messages you have sent. Editing your question or regenerating an answer replaces what is on screen but still uses a message.
From the guide AI Mode: ask, follow up, and read the sources
Can I come back to a chat tomorrow?
Not from 4Search: the chat lives in the browser tab and is gone when you close it. To keep it, select Save before you leave, or Copy the answers you need.
From the guide AI Mode: ask, follow up, and read the sources
Can I paste a long text and ask about it?
Yes, up to 2,000 characters per message. For longer texts, paste the part that matters most, or split it over two messages.
From the guide AI Mode: ask, follow up, and read the sources
Does AI Mode search the web?
Its answers are built from the site's own news index. The links it suggests can run a Web or Shopping search on this site, and Web results under an answer runs your question as a Web search.
From the guide AI Mode: ask, follow up, and read the sources
What keys can I use?
Enter sends, Shift+Enter adds a line, Esc stops an answer, and / puts the cursor in the message box when you are not typing elsewhere.
From the guide AI Mode: ask, follow up, and read the sources
Why is there no AI Overview on my search?
The usual reasons: AI-assisted answers are off in your privacy choices, you are on the Images or Videos tab, or the box could not load this time. A box that failed says so and offers Retry AI overview. See When an AI answer does not appear.
From the guide The AI Overview above search results
Can I hide the overview but keep searching normally?
Yes. Turn off AI-assisted answers in your privacy choices. Search works exactly as before; the box only offers to turn AI answers back on.
From the guide The AI Overview above search results
Does the overview change if I search the same thing again?
It can. The summary is written for your words and the results of the moment, so the same search on another day may get a different summary.
From the guide The AI Overview above search results
Why does the overview say something the results do not?
The model also draws on what it learned before, which can be older or simply wrong. When the two disagree, trust the dated, named articles in the results.
From the guide The AI Overview above search results
Which buttons use up one of my 10 messages?
Anything that asks for a new answer: sending a question, Regenerate, an edited question, Continue, and Ask AI on a result card. Copy, Share, Save, Listen and the search buttons do not.
From the guide Copy, share, save, listen and regenerate
Where does Save put the file?
Wherever your browser saves downloads. It is a plain text file with Markdown formatting, which any text editor or notes app can open.
From the guide Copy, share, save, listen and regenerate
Listen says there is no voice. What can I do?
Your browser has no voice installed on the device for the page's language. Install one in your device's speech settings, or try another browser.
From the guide Copy, share, save, listen and regenerate
Does changing the topic start a new chat?
Not when you pick it from the Topics list or remove it with ×: the conversation continues. Opening AI Mode from a different topic's page, with a different topic in the address, starts a new chat.
From the guide Ask AI about one topic
Does a topic make answers more accurate?
It keeps them on the subject and makes the sources more relevant, which usually helps. It does not make the AI infallible: check the sources as always.
From the guide Ask AI about one topic
Why did AI Mode answer a different question from the one I meant?
It answers the most likely reading of your words. Rephrase with more detail, or edit your last question with Edit under it.
From the guide Get better answers from AI Mode
Can AI Mode open a link I paste?
No. It does not visit web pages. Paste the text you want it to read instead.
From the guide Get better answers from AI Mode
Will asking the same question again give the same answer?
Not always. Answers are written fresh each time, and the news may have changed. Regenerate asks again on purpose.
From the guide Get better answers from AI Mode
Does AI Mode remember what I said earlier?
Yes, within the chat. Each new message is sent with the earlier messages of the same chat, so you can refer to them. A new chat starts with no memory.
From the guide Follow-up questions and the results column
Why did my follow-up get different sources from the first answer?
Every message runs its own search. A follow-up's search adds its own words to the earlier ones, so it can find other articles. Each answer lists its own sources.
From the guide Follow-up questions and the results column
Can I make the column show a different search?
Yes. Select one of the searches in the row above the results, select a News link in an answer, or use Ask AI on a card.
From the guide Follow-up questions and the results column
Do I need an account to use AI answers?
No. There is no account on 4Search. AI answers only need the AI-assisted answers choice to be on in your browser.
From the guide AI answers on 4Search
Is AI Mode on every 4Search site?
It is on the sites where AI answers are turned on. When a site has it, AI Mode is the first tab in the row of services, to the left of All, and it is in the Menu too.
From the guide AI answers on 4Search
Does the AI decide which results I see?
No. The regular results are the same whether AI answers are on or off. The AI only writes the overview box and the answers in AI Mode.
From the guide AI answers on 4Search
Where do the sources come from?
From the site's own news index: the same articles you see on the News tab. The column beside the chat shows the same search.
From the guide Sources and citations in AI Mode
Why are only six articles read?
Each answer reads the best few matches so that it stays focused and quick. To see more coverage, open the results column or News on this.
From the guide Sources and citations in AI Mode
Can I ask AI Mode for more sources?
You can ask it to list sources or name the outlets, but it only knows the articles it read for that message. To read more, run the search on the News tab.
From the guide Sources and citations in AI Mode
Does the AI Overview have sources too?
No. The overview is a short summary without citations. Use AI Mode when you want to see what an answer is based on.
From the guide Sources and citations in AI Mode
Does turning AI answers off delete anything?
It stops anything new from being sent to the AI provider from this browser. An AI Mode conversation on screen stays until you start a new chat or close the tab.
From the guide Turn AI answers on or off
I allowed AI answers but the box still asks. Why?
The choice may not have been saved: private windows, blocked cookies or a content blocker can prevent it. Allow it again, or see Troubleshooting.
From the guide Turn AI answers on or off
Can I keep AI Mode and hide only the overview?
No. One switch covers both features.
From the guide Turn AI answers on or off
Does a failed AI answer mean my search failed too?
No. The results load separately and are not affected.
From the guide When an AI answer does not appear
Why do I get a different message from the ones listed here?
A few rarer messages say AI answers are unavailable for the moment on this site. They are not something you can fix in your browser; try again later.
From the guide When an AI answer does not appear
Topics and your front page
What is the difference between a topic and a search?
A search looks for your words anywhere; a topic is a subject the site keeps track of, with its own page and articles. Put the two together, a search within a topic, to find your words in one subject only. See Search within a topic.
Why does the home page show different groups from my friend's?
If either of you follows topics, those come first on that browser's front page. The rest of the page is the same for everyone and changes through the day. See The front page by topic.
Do I need an account to follow topics?
No. Followed topics are kept in your browser, with your consent to Saved preferences. See Follow topics.
How many topics can I follow?
Up to 50 on each site. The front page shows groups for the first eight.
From the guide Follow topics
Will my topics follow me to my phone or another site?
No. The list lives in the browser where you made it, and each site of the 4 Network keeps its own.
From the guide Follow topics
I followed topics but they are gone. Why?
Clearing cookies or site data, a private window, or turning off Saved preferences removes the list. Follow the topics again once Saved preferences is on.
From the guide Follow topics
Which topics come first?
The ones you followed most recently.
From the guide Follow topics
Why is a story I saw this morning gone?
The groups are rebuilt about every ten minutes as new stories arrive, and older stories make way. Open the topic's page, or the Latest tab, to find it again.
From the guide The front page by topic
Can I choose which groups the site shows?
The site's groups are set for each site. To put your own subjects at the top, follow their topics.
From the guide The front page by topic
Why does the front page look different on another 4Search site?
Each site has its own topics, so its own groups. See Topics and your front page.
From the guide The front page by topic
What does the tone bar mean?
It shows whether the article's language reads as positive, neutral or negative. Point at it for the share that reads positive.
From the guide The front page by topic
How many topics are there?
It depends on the site. The Topics tab says how many the site you are on has; on 4Search it is several thousand, counting all the subtopics.
From the guide Topics and your front page
Who decides the topics?
Each site's topics are set up by 4Search for that site's subject. You cannot add your own, but you can follow the ones you want and search inside any of them.
From the guide Topics and your front page
Are topics the same as the News filters?
No. A filter narrows a search by date, length or tone; a topic narrows it to a subject. You can use both at once.
From the guide Topics and your front page
Why does the Searching label show an address rather than a name?
It names the topic the way the site addresses it, from its main topic down, such as /sports/baseball/. The name in the Topics list and on the topic's page is the same topic.
From the guide Search within a topic
Can I search in two topics at once?
Not from the page's buttons and lists, which choose one topic at a time. For a wider net, search in the broader topic one level up the trail.
From the guide Search within a topic
Does the Web tab use the topic?
Web results come from outside 4Search's own news index and are not limited by topics. When you select a topic with words in the box on the Web or Shopping tab, the search runs on News, where topics apply.
From the guide Search within a topic
Why does an article appear in a topic I did not expect?
An article joins a topic when it carries the topic's words and fits its subject. Articles can carry many words, so now and then one lands in an unexpected topic. What this topic collects on shows the words the topic uses.
From the guide A topic's page
How current are the articles on a topic's page?
The Feed window count says how far back they go, usually the last 30 days. Some quieter topics look further back.
From the guide A topic's page
Why does the list look different on another site?
Each site of the 4 Network has its own topics. See Topics and your front page.
From the guide The Topics list on the left
What does Coverage count?
How many stories each topic collected over the last year. It is a quick way to see the busiest subjects first.
From the guide The Topics list on the left
The arrow keeps spinning. What now?
Subtopics load when you open them. If they do not appear, select the arrow again or reload the page.
From the guide The Topics list on the left
Why does the finder suggest a topic that does not contain my words?
It also matches by meaning. A search for mortgage rates suggests Interest Rates & The Fed, for example, because the two subjects are closely related. The topic's description tells you whether it fits.
From the guide The Topics tab: browse and find topics
Is the Topics tab on every site?
It is on every site that has topics. Each site's directory lists its own topics.
From the guide The Topics tab: browse and find topics
Does the finder search articles?
No, it finds topics. To search articles, use Search “...” here on a card, or the News tab.
From the guide The Topics tab: browse and find topics
Finance
Is anything on Finance investment advice?
No. Finance shows prices, charts, statistics, analysts' views, news and traders' odds for information. It does not recommend that you buy or sell anything, and its data may be incomplete, inaccurate or up to 15 minutes late. Every Finance page carries a notice that says so. See How fresh the data is.
What do green and red mean?
Green means a price is up from the previous close, and red means it is down. The same colors show positive and negative changes in tables, tiles and charts, and on the economy page a change is colored by whether it is good news or bad, so a rise in unemployment shows red.
Why does a number show a dash?
A dash means the figure is not available or does not apply: a company with no dividend has no yield, one that lost money has no P/E, and a fund has no earnings. See Key statistics, explained.
Does Finance cover companies outside the United States?
Many, yes. Search for the company, and its page shows the exchange it trades on and the currency of its price under the name. Some exchanges report later than 15 minutes, and the note under the price says how much. See Search Finance.
Why can I not find a stock?
Finance does not list every security in the world. Try the ticker, or a shorter part of the name, in the Finance search box. If a page cannot be found, the stock may not be covered.
Does Finance work without JavaScript?
The pages themselves, with their tables, news and statistics, load without it, and charts appear as a simple line. Live price updates, interactive charts, sorting, the watchlist and search suggestions need JavaScript to run.
Can I use Finance in dark mode?
Yes. Finance follows the site's color theme. See Choose Hybrid, Light or Dark.
What is the difference between Finance and Predictions?
Finance shows prediction-market odds that are about money: the Fed, inflation, stocks, crypto and commodities, beside the instruments they concern. Predictions covers every other kind of market, such as elections, sports and culture. See Prediction-market odds.
Why is there no summary box on my page?
AI answers may be turned off for the site, or you may be on a page that does not carry one. The comparison, watchlist and market-list pages do not have a summary.
From the guide The AI market summary, what it is and what it is not
Does the summary give financial advice?
No. It is a description of the page, and it says it may be incomplete or incorrect and must not be relied on as financial advice.
From the guide The AI market summary, what it is and what it is not
Can I turn it off again?
Yes. Open the privacy panel and switch off AI-assisted answers. See Your privacy choices.
From the guide The AI market summary, what it is and what it is not
Is the summary written by a person?
No. It is written by an AI model, and the badge says so.
From the guide The AI market summary, what it is and what it is not
Why is the chart blank or say "No chart data for this period"?
No price history could be loaded for that instrument and period. Try a shorter range, or reload the page in a moment.
From the guide Read and customize a price chart
Can I draw trend lines on the chart?
No. You can add indicators, compare symbols, and measure a move by dragging.
From the guide Read and customize a price chart
Why can I not drag to measure on the 1D chart?
Measuring works on ranges longer than one day. On the 1D chart, hover to read each point.
From the guide Read and customize a price chart
Do the charts update during the day?
The last point of a 1D chart follows the latest price while the page is open. Prices may be delayed by up to 15 minutes. See How fresh the data is.
From the guide Read and customize a price chart
What do the numbers in brackets mean, such as RSI (14)?
They are the number of periods the calculation looks back over. On a daily chart a period is a day.
From the guide Read and customize a price chart
Why is there no Financials tab on a fund or an index?
Those tabs belong to companies. Funds have a Fund tab instead. See Funds, indexes, coins and currencies.
From the guide Research a company: financials, analysts, profile and filings
What does "free cash flow" mean?
The cash a company generates from running its business after it has paid for the equipment and buildings it needs to keep going.
From the guide Research a company: financials, analysts, profile and filings
Are the analyst ratings advice?
No. They are other people's opinions, shown for information. Nothing on Finance is investment advice.
From the guide Research a company: financials, analysts, profile and filings
Where do I find the date of the next earnings report?
On the Earnings card in the side column of the Overview, and on the earnings calendar.
From the guide Research a company: financials, analysts, profile and filings
Can I compare more than six?
No. The page uses the first six symbols in the box.
From the guide Compare stocks side by side
Why are some cells empty?
Some figures apply only to companies. A fund has no P/E, and a coin has no dividend.
From the guide Compare stocks side by side
Can I save a comparison?
Not in the page itself. Bookmark its address, which holds the symbols.
From the guide Compare stocks side by side
Can I buy bitcoin here?
No. Finance shows prices, charts and news. It does not trade.
From the guide Crypto and commodities, coins, oil, gold and crops
What is "market cap" for a coin?
The coin's price multiplied by the number of coins in circulation.
From the guide Crypto and commodities, coins, oil, gold and crops
Why does gold's price here differ from the price of a gold coin or bar?
Finance shows the futures price for an ounce of gold. Prices for physical gold include costs and markups.
From the guide Crypto and commodities, coins, oil, gold and crops
Where are currencies?
On their own page. See Currencies.
From the guide Crypto and commodities, coins, oil, gold and crops
What is the dollar index?
A measure of the U.S. dollar against a basket of major currencies. When it rises, the dollar is strengthening against them. Its page works like any other.
From the guide Currencies, exchange rates and the converter
Why does the converter's rate differ from another converter or my bank?
Rates move constantly, and every source takes its numbers at a slightly different moment and with its own margin. Finance's figures may be delayed up to 15 minutes.
From the guide Currencies, exchange rates and the converter
Does the converter keep my amounts?
No. Nothing you type in it is saved.
From the guide Currencies, exchange rates and the converter
Why does a day show a different set of columns?
Before a company reports, the table shows last year's EPS for comparison. After it reports, the table replaces that with the actual result and the surprise.
From the guide The earnings calendar, who reports this week
Why is the time a dash?
The calendar has no time for that report, so it is not known whether it comes before the market opens or after it closes.
From the guide The earnings calendar, who reports this week
Is an earnings beat good news for the stock?
Not always. A stock can fall after a beat if investors hoped for more. The surprise only compares the result with the estimate.
From the guide The earnings calendar, who reports this week
Why does the date on a tile say a month, not today?
Most of these figures are published monthly, a few weeks after the month ends. The tile shows the month it is for.
From the guide The U.S. economy, inflation, jobs, rates and growth
What does "CPI" stand for?
Consumer Price Index, the standard measure of inflation. The tile shows how much prices have risen over the last twelve months.
From the guide The U.S. economy, inflation, jobs, rates and growth
Is this a forecast?
No. The tiles show what has been published. The odds are what traders expect, which is a different thing from what will happen.
From the guide The U.S. economy, inflation, jobs, rates and growth
Is more coverage a good sign?
No. Coverage can be about good news, bad news, or a stock being in the headlines for its own sake. The sentiment bar helps, and neither is a forecast.
From the guide In the news, the most mentioned stocks, coins and markets
Why are some well-known companies missing?
The list shows the names with the most articles in the period. A company with little coverage in that window will not appear.
From the guide In the news, the most mentioned stocks, coins and markets
How is this different from Market movers?
Movers ranks by price change or volume. This page ranks by how much is written. See Market movers.
From the guide In the news, the most mentioned stocks, coins and markets
What is the difference between the Dow, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq?
They are different baskets. The Dow follows 30 large companies. The S&P 500 follows 500 large U.S. companies. The Nasdaq follows the stocks listed on the Nasdaq exchange, which is heavy in technology. Select any of them to see its page.
From the guide Stock market indexes, from the S&P 500 to the world
Why is an index measured in points, not dollars?
An index is a calculated score, not something you can buy. Funds that track an index have prices in dollars.
From the guide Stock market indexes, from the S&P 500 to the world
Can I buy an index?
Not directly. People usually buy an exchange-traded fund or an index fund that tracks it. Finance does not sell or trade anything.
From the guide Stock market indexes, from the S&P 500 to the world
Are the statistics live?
The price, the range markers and the "off high" figures follow the price. Figures such as EPS, P/E, market cap and the analyst target are updated less often, and some depend on the company's latest report. Prices may be delayed up to 15 minutes. See How fresh the data is.
From the guide Key statistics, explained
Is a low P/E ratio a good sign?
Not by itself. A low P/E can mean a bargain, or that investors expect profits to fall. Compare a stock with its peers rather than judging the number alone, and remember that nothing on Finance is investment advice.
From the guide Key statistics, explained
What does TTM stand for?
Trailing twelve months: the most recent four quarters of results.
From the guide Key statistics, explained
Why do some stocks have no P/E?
A P/E needs positive earnings. A company that lost money over the last twelve months has none.
From the guide Key statistics, explained
Why does the Leaderboard say it covers only a few days?
Tracking began on the date shown at the top of the page. Longer windows will fill in over time.
From the guide The Leaderboard, who makes the market's lists most often
Is a stock that is often a top gainer a good buy?
Not necessarily. It tells you the stock moves a lot, in either direction. Nothing on Finance is investment advice.
From the guide The Leaderboard, who makes the market's lists most often
What does "short" mean?
Selling a stock you do not own, in the hope of buying it back cheaper later. A high short percentage means many investors are betting on a fall. See Key statistics, explained.
From the guide The Leaderboard, who makes the market's lists most often
Why does it say the market is closed?
U.S. stock markets trade on weekdays during set hours, with shorter sessions before the open and after the close. Outside those hours the overview shows the last prices and says when they were set. Bitcoin and other coins trade around the clock, so their numbers keep moving.
From the guide Read the Finance overview
The overview did not change when I came back to the tab. Why?
Prices refresh while the page is open and you are active, and they pause after you have been away for a while. A Resume button appears when that happens. See How fresh the data is.
From the guide Read the Finance overview
Can I choose which indexes the strip shows?
No. The strip and the five index buttons are the same for everyone.
From the guide Read the Finance overview
Why are the lists limited to larger companies?
Those three lists are defined as U.S. stocks worth $2 billion or more. Smaller companies have their own list, Small-cap gainers.
From the guide Market movers, gainers, losers and the most active
How often do the lists change?
They are recomputed every few minutes while U.S. markets trade, and the page redraws them for you while it is open.
From the guide Market movers, gainers, losers and the most active
Who has been on these lists most often?
See The Leaderboard.
From the guide Market movers, gainers, losers and the most active
Why does a headline have no Positive or Negative label?
Not every article has a tone the index could read, and a neutral story gets no label.
From the guide News, coverage and sentiment on a stock's page
Does positive sentiment mean the stock will rise?
No. Sentiment describes the tone of recent coverage. It is not a forecast and not advice.
From the guide News, coverage and sentiment on a stock's page
Can I see which companies the news is talking about most?
Yes. See In the news.
From the guide News, coverage and sentiment on a stock's page
Is there a Finance app?
No separate one. Finance is part of the 4Search site, which you can add to your home screen.
From the guide Use Finance on a phone
Can I rotate my phone?
Yes. In landscape more columns fit on screen.
From the guide Use Finance on a phone
Why are some columns missing on my phone?
They step aside so the name, price and percentage change fit. Slide the table sideways, or rotate the phone, to see the rest.
From the guide Use Finance on a phone
Why does the page say no options were found?
Not every stock has listed options. The page says when none were found for the symbol.
From the guide Look at an options chain
Can I place a trade from here?
No. Finance is for information; it does not trade.
From the guide Look at an options chain
Why are some IV figures blank?
Implied volatility is left blank for a contract when none is available for it, which happens most often with contracts that rarely trade.
From the guide Look at an options chain
Why does a fund have no Financials tab?
Financial statements belong to companies. A fund has a Fund tab instead, with its holdings, costs and category.
From the guide Funds, indexes, coins, currencies and commodities
Why do an index's numbers not look like prices?
An index has no price. Its level is a score calculated from the stocks in it, so it is measured in points, and its change is shown in points and in percent.
From the guide Funds, indexes, coins, currencies and commodities
Are futures prices the price I would pay today?
Not exactly. A futures price is for delivery on a future date, so it can differ from the price for immediate delivery. Finance labels them front-month futures contracts.
From the guide Funds, indexes, coins, currencies and commodities
Is Finance free?
Yes. You do not need an account to use it.
From the guide Finance: quotes, charts, markets and your watchlist
Can I buy or sell stocks here?
No. Finance shows prices, charts and news. It does not trade, hold money or connect to a broker.

Does Finance work on a phone?
Yes. Tables and tab rows slide sideways, and the chart fits the screen. See Finance on a phone.

Which sites have Finance?
It is on 4Search and 4Conservative. The other sites in the 4 Network do not have it.

Is an 84% chance a promise?
No. It means traders priced it that way, and an outcome priced at 84% still fails some of the time.
From the guide Prediction-market odds beside prices and in the Predictions section
How current are the odds?
They are read from the venues every few minutes. Each page says how long ago, for example Read from the venues 4 min ago.
From the guide Prediction-market odds beside prices and in the Predictions section
Why do two venues show different odds for the same question?
Each venue has its own traders and its own rules. Finance shows both, and says when the numbers are far apart.
From the guide Prediction-market odds beside prices and in the Predictions section
Can I bet here?
No. Finance shows the odds only. It does not trade, and the links to the venues are for reading.
From the guide Prediction-market odds beside prices and in the Predictions section
Why is the price different from my broker's?
Finance may be up to 15 minutes behind, and brokers show the live price. Check the time under the price on Finance.

Why did the price stop moving?
The market may be closed, or the page may have paused after you were away. Look for the Resume button, or reload the page.
From the guide How fresh the data is, delays, market hours and live updates
Why do I see a price for a company on a weekend?
It is the price from the last trading session. The time line says when.
From the guide How fresh the data is, delays, market hours and live updates
Why is the overview's time earlier than now?
It shows the time of the latest data it has, in the exchange's time zone, not your local time.
From the guide How fresh the data is, delays, market hours and live updates
What is the little "Odds" label beside some names?
It marks an instrument that prediction markets have markets about. Select it to see them. The numbers are traders' prices, not a forecast. See Prediction-market odds.

Why does the price change while I am reading?
Prices refresh on their own while the page is open. They may still be up to 15 minutes behind the market.
From the guide A stock's page, from price to news
Can I see a stock's page without searching?
Yes. Any ticker or name on a Finance page that you can select opens its page, and the address always has the form /finance/quote/ followed by the ticker, such as /finance/quote/MSFT/.
From the guide A stock's page, from price to news
Why does a company page have no Financials tab?
Funds, indexes, currencies, coins and commodities have no company results to show, so those tabs only appear on stocks.

What is a basis point?
One hundredth of a percentage point. A change from 4.00% to 4.25% is 25 basis points.
From the guide Rates and bonds, the Treasury yield curve and the Fed funds rate
Does an inverted curve mean a recession is coming?
It has often come before one in the past, but it is not a forecast, and Finance does not predict anything.
From the guide Rates and bonds, the Treasury yield curve and the Fed funds rate
Where do the numbers come from?
The curve is from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the Fed funds rate is from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The page names them under each card. Market rates are market data, and may be delayed up to 15 minutes.
From the guide Rates and bonds, the Treasury yield curve and the Fed funds rate
Why do my chart settings reset when I reload the page?
Saved preferences is probably off. Without it, settings last only for the page view. Turn it on in the privacy panel.
From the guide What Finance remembers, your watchlist and chart settings
Will my settings follow me to another device?
No. They live in one browser on one device.
From the guide What Finance remembers, your watchlist and chart settings
Can 4Search see my watchlist?
The watchlist is not stored on 4Search's servers. The symbols on it go with the requests that fetch their prices, which is how the page can show them, and those requests are part of ordinary request records. See the Privacy Policy.
From the guide What Finance remembers, your watchlist and chart settings
Why did my search open a page instead of a list of results?
Because Finance was confident your words name one instrument. To see a list of matches, make the search broader, or use the suggestions list, which shows up to eight possibilities.
From the guide Search Finance for a stock, fund, coin or topic
The company I want does not appear. What now?
Try its ticker, or part of its name. Finance covers stocks and funds listed in the U.S. and many listed elsewhere, but not every security in the world.

Does the search box search the whole web?
No. It searches instruments and finance news only. To search everything, use the All or Web tabs.

Why are the sectors tracked through funds?
A sector has no single price. Finance uses the Select Sector SPDR funds, one for each sector, as the stand-in for each sector, and shows their prices and returns.
From the guide Sectors, which parts of the market are leading
Which sector is a company in?
A company's page shows its sector and industry in the About card and under its name.
From the guide Sectors, which parts of the market are leading
Does a green sector mean I should buy it?
No. The tiles show what happened, and nothing on Finance is investment advice.
From the guide Sectors, which parts of the market are leading
Does my sort survive a refresh?
Yes. A list that refreshes itself while you have the page open keeps the sort you chose. Reloading the page starts again from the table's own order.
From the guide Sort tables and read the range columns
Why is a range bar empty or a dash?
There is not enough price history to place the price. A newly listed stock has no 52-week range, for example, and some indexes have none.
From the guide Sort tables and read the range columns
Is a stock close to its high a good buy?
The columns describe where the price is, not what it will do. They are a way to find and compare, not a signal.
From the guide Sort tables and read the range columns
Is this a list of the best stocks?
No. It is a list of the most widely held. Many holders mean a stock is popular, which is not the same as it being a good investment.
From the guide Top stocks, the 200 most widely held
What counts as an institution?
Funds and firms that must report their holdings to regulators. The count is how many of them report holding the stock.
From the guide Top stocks, the 200 most widely held
How is this different from the Leaderboard?
Top stocks counts who owns a stock. The Leaderboard counts how often a stock has made the day's lists of gainers, losers and most active.
From the guide Top stocks, the 200 most widely held
Why is a subject I expected not listed?
A topic appears once it averages about a story a month. Search for it in the Finance box instead.
From the guide Finance topics, news by subject from stocks to mortgages
Do the market gauges mean the topic moves the market?
No. They are instruments that trade with the subject, shown as context.
From the guide Finance topics, news by subject from stocks to mortgages
Can I follow a finance topic?
There is no Follow button on a Finance topic page. The Finance watchlist follows instruments, not subjects. To follow subjects across 4Search, see Follow topics.
From the guide Finance topics, news by subject from stocks to mortgages
How many stocks can I follow?
Up to 50.
From the guide Follow stocks and build a watchlist
Will my watchlist follow me to my phone?
No. It lives in the browser where you made it. Follow the same things again on the other device.
From the guide Follow stocks and build a watchlist
I followed a stock and it disappeared. Why?
Most often the site's data was cleared, Saved preferences was turned off, or you opened Finance in another browser or a private window. See Saved preferences.
From the guide Follow stocks and build a watchlist
Does following a stock send me alerts?
No. A watchlist is a page you open. Finance does not send notifications or emails.

Politics
Does Politics take sides?
No. Politics shows official records, such as votes, bills and rules, and what the press published about them. Nothing in it is an endorsement of any candidate, party or position, and the news it lists reflects what the press published, not what 4Search thinks. The AI Briefings are written to stay neutral, but like any AI text they can be wrong, so check the records.
Does Politics tell me how to vote or who will win?
No. Politics does not recommend candidates or parties and does not forecast elections. The odds it shows come from prediction markets: they are what traders are paying for each outcome, not a forecast by 4Search, and they can be wrong. They are not betting or investment advice.
Which governments does Politics cover?
The federal government: Congress, the President and federal agencies. The Elections page also covers governor races. State legislatures and local governments are not covered as records, although the topics and the news can include stories about them.
Which years does Politics cover?
The current Congress, the 119th, which meets in 2025 and 2026. Its bills, votes and members are here. Bills and votes from earlier Congresses are not.
How is Politics different from Predictions?
Politics shows the prediction markets that bear on politics and government, placed beside the related records and news: a bill, a vote, a member's seat or a race. Predictions lists markets on every subject, with each market's news and its biggest moves.
Why does the box ask me to allow AI answers?
Writing a briefing sends the page's subject, its records and recent headlines to an AI provider, which needs your permission. Select Allow AI Answers to give it, or Manage privacy choices to see your options first.
From the guide AI Briefings on Politics pages
Why does the box say AI Overview on some pages?
On search results and topic pages there is no single record to summarize, only headlines. The box answers from those headlines and carries the label AI Overview.
From the guide AI Briefings on Politics pages
Why is there no briefing on a page?
List pages, such as Votes, Bills and Members, do not have one. On other pages the box does not appear when AI answers are not offered on the site.
From the guide AI Briefings on Politics pages
Can a briefing tell me how to vote?
No. Politics briefings are written not to advise on how to vote or whom to support, and not to predict election results.
From the guide AI Briefings on Politics pages
Can the briefing be wrong?
Yes. Like any AI text, it can be incomplete or incorrect. Check the page's tables and the official source for anything that matters.
From the guide AI Briefings on Politics pages
Does "Became law" mean the President signed it?
It means the record shows the bill became a Public Law. The Actions list shows the steps, such as Signed by President.
From the guide Read a bill's page: stages, summary, actions and votes
Why are there two bills with the same name?
A bill is often introduced in both the House and the Senate, each with its own number. The Related bills card lists the companions the Library of Congress has linked.
From the guide Read a bill's page: stages, summary, actions and votes
Why is there no summary?
The Congressional Research Service writes summaries after a bill is introduced, and one can take weeks to appear. Until it is published, the page says so.
From the guide Read a bill's page: stages, summary, actions and votes
Why do some headlines under In the news look unrelated?
Headlines are found by matching the bill's number and title. A short number can match something else, such as a score or a price. Open the story to check before relying on it.
From the guide Read a bill's page: stages, summary, actions and votes
What does the date next to Latest action mean?
It is the date of the newest entry in the bill's Actions list.
From the guide Read a bill's page: stages, summary, actions and votes
How do I find a bill by its number?
Type the number in the Politics search box, such as H.R. 1 or S. 146. You land on the bill's page. The number is not unique across Congresses, so Politics looks in the current one.
From the guide Find a bill and see where it stands
Why does a bill show Introduced when it has been sent to a committee?
The status changes only at certain steps. A bill stays Introduced while it waits in committee. It becomes Reported by committee when the committee sends it to the full chamber, then Passed the House or Passed the Senate when a chamber votes. The bill's Actions list shows when it was referred to a committee.
From the guide Find a bill and see where it stands
Why do some bills have a policy area and others do not?
Policy areas come from the Library of Congress's records, and not every bill has one.
From the guide Find a bill and see where it stands
Does Politics have bills from earlier Congresses?
No. The Bills page covers the current Congress, the 119th. A bill number from an earlier Congress has no page here.
From the guide Find a bill and see where it stands
How do I see bills on a subject?
Pick a policy area, or search a word. A bill's page also lists subject tags, and selecting one searches the Bills page for it.
From the guide Find a bill and see where it stands
Does Politics show hearings and meeting schedules?
No. Politics shows who sits on each committee, its subcommittees and the news that names it. A bill's page records when a committee acts on it, in the bill's Actions list.
From the guide See who sits on each committee
Why does a subcommittee show no members?
A subcommittee can be listed with no members when none are on record for it. Its parent committee's page still shows its own members.
From the guide See who sits on each committee
What is the difference between a committee and a subcommittee?
A subcommittee is a smaller group inside a committee that takes up one part of its work. A subcommittee's page names its parent committee in its title and in the breadcrumb at the top.
From the guide See who sits on each committee
How current are the lists of members?
Committee memberships change only when members are assigned or reassigned, and Politics refreshes the lists about once a day. See Where the information comes from.
From the guide See who sits on each committee
How current is the data?
It depends on the part. Roll calls usually appear within about ten minutes, bills are refreshed every 15 minutes, market odds every few minutes, and members and committees about once a day. The table above lists each, and every page says the records may lag the official record by a few hours.
From the guide Where Politics gets its information and how current it is
Why is a vote or a bill I know about not here yet?
The record may not be published yet, or it may not have been copied yet. Roll calls are listed once the House Clerk or the Senate publishes them. Bill records come from the Library of Congress and can trail by a short while. The official source is always authoritative.
From the guide Where Politics gets its information and how current it is
Why do the numbers differ from the official site?
Usually because of timing, or because Politics calculates a figure of its own, such as the share of votes with a member's party. The vote tallies, results and bill actions come from the official records.
From the guide Where Politics gets its information and how current it is
Who decides which news appears?
Politics does not pick stories. Headlines come from the news index, which classifies each article, and they are listed by recency or by how well they match. They reflect what the press published, not 4Search's views.
From the guide Where Politics gets its information and how current it is
Can I use Politics as the official record?
No. It is a convenient way to find and read the records, and it links to the official source on each page. For anything that depends on exact wording, use the official text.
From the guide Where Politics gets its information and how current it is
What does "Market favorite" mean?
It is the leading outcome of the most traded market on the race, shown with the chance the market gives it. It is the market's top choice, not a forecast by 4Search and not a poll.
From the guide Follow the elections: control of Congress and the races
Why is my state's Senate race not listed?
The table lists a Senate seat when its term ends at this election, or when a market exists on a race for it. If none of your state's seats is up, there is no Senate race to show. Your state's governor race appears only when a market exists on it.
From the guide Follow the elections: control of Congress and the races
Does Politics show polls?
No. Politics does not run or publish polls. The odds on the page come from prediction markets, and the news cards show what the press published.
From the guide Follow the elections: control of Congress and the races
Where do the percentages come from?
From the markets on Kalshi and Polymarket. Each market names its source, and the page is refreshed every few minutes. The percentages are what traders are paying for each outcome, and they can be wrong.
From the guide Follow the elections: control of Congress and the races
When do the odds update?
Each market card shows when it was last updated, such as updated 8m ago.
From the guide Follow the elections: control of Congress and the races
What is the difference between an executive order and a proclamation?
An executive order directs the operations of the federal government. A proclamation usually marks an observance or sets trade or immigration measures. Both are published in the Federal Register, which is the source of this list and of the official text.
From the guide Read the President's executive orders and other actions
Why is the published date later than the signed date?
A document reaches the Federal Register after it is signed, and it is printed there on a later day. Politics lists it once it is published.
From the guide Read the President's executive orders and other actions
Why is an order I heard about not listed?
It may not be published yet. Politics copies the Federal Register on a schedule, so a document can take some hours to appear after publication. See Where the information comes from.
From the guide Read the President's executive orders and other actions
Does the page list every White House announcement?
No. It lists the documents published in the Federal Register. White House statements, fact sheets and speeches are not documents of that kind and are not here.
From the guide Read the President's executive orders and other actions
How do I read the full text?
Select the document's title to open its Federal Register page, or PDF to open the printed version. Those are the official texts.
From the guide Read the President's executive orders and other actions
Do I need an account to follow?
No. Your list is kept in your browser. There is nothing to sign in to.
From the guide Follow members, bills, committees, races and markets
Why does a box ask me to enable cookies?
Following saves your list in your browser, and that is one of the optional choices in your privacy settings, called Saved preferences. Until you turn it on, nothing can be saved. Select Enable cookies and follow, or Not now to leave it off.
From the guide Follow members, bills, committees, races and markets
Will my list appear on my phone or another computer?
No. The list stays in the browser where you made it. Following on another browser or device starts a new list.
From the guide Follow members, bills, committees, races and markets
Why did my list disappear?
Clearing cookies or site data deletes it, and so does turning Saved preferences off. A different browser, or a private window, has its own list.
From the guide Follow members, bills, committees, races and markets
Can I follow a vote, an executive order or a topic?
No. You can follow members, committees, bills, races and markets. To follow topics, see Follow topics.
From the guide Follow members, bills, committees, races and markets
Will I get alerts or emails?
No. Politics does not send alerts. Open the Following page to see what changed.
From the guide Follow members, bills, committees, races and markets
What does "no longer found" mean?
The page tells you when something on your list cannot be found any more, for example a market that has closed. A button removes those items from your list.
From the guide Follow members, bills, committees, races and markets
Does a higher number mean the person is doing better?
No. The number counts articles that name them, and an article can name someone for any reason. It says nothing about approval, importance or whether the coverage was favorable.
From the guide See who is in the political news
Why is a person I expected not on the list?
Each card shows the 40 most named people for the period, so someone named less often falls off. The Members of Congress card lists only members in office. A member who has left office can still appear in Everyone.
From the guide See who is in the political news
Why are people who are not members of Congress on the page?
Political coverage names many people, such as the President, other officials, foreign leaders and candidates. The Everyone card counts all of them.
From the guide See who is in the political news
How often does the count update?
The 24-hour count covers a rolling window and is refreshed about every half hour. The 7-day and 30-day counts are built from daily totals. See Where the information comes from.
From the guide See who is in the political news
What does "voted with their party" mean?
It compares each of the member's Yea and Nay votes with how most of their party voted on the same roll call. If most Republicans voted Yea and the member voted Yea, that vote counts as with their party. Votes where the member did not vote Yea or Nay, or where their party had no majority position, are left out. For an independent, the comparison is with the party they caucus with.
From the guide Read a member's page: votes, bills, committees and news
What counts as a missed vote?
A roll call on which the member is recorded as Not voting. A member who answers Present has voted. The page does not give the reason a vote was missed.
From the guide Read a member's page: votes, bills, committees and news
Why does the page show only this Congress?
The counts and the Votes card cover the current Congress, the 119th, which began in January 2025. Politics does not hold votes from earlier Congresses.
From the guide Read a member's page: votes, bills, committees and news
Why does a member's page say Former member?
The member served in the current Congress and has since left office. Their votes while serving are still on the record.
From the guide Read a member's page: votes, bills, committees and news
Why do the numbers differ from what I have read elsewhere?
Sources can count differently: which votes are included, how independents are compared and how a vote is classed as missed. On Politics the definitions are the ones above, and the votes behind the counts are listed on the page.
From the guide Read a member's page: votes, bills, committees and news
How do I find my representative?
Choose Representatives and your state, then look for your district number. Politics does not look up a district from an address. The House of Representatives' own website does.
From the guide Browse Congress by state, party and chamber
Why does Alaska come before Alabama?
The list is in the order of the states' two-letter postal abbreviations, and AK comes before AL. Sorting by the State heading follows the same abbreviations. To see one state, use the state menu.
From the guide Browse Congress by state, party and chamber
What does Seat up mean?
It is the year the senator's seat is next on the ballot. A Senate term ends in January after a November election, so a term ending in January 2029 shows 2028.
From the guide Browse Congress by state, party and chamber
What is "senior" and "junior" next to a state?
Each state has two senators. The label tells them apart: the senior senator is the one who has served longer in the Senate.
From the guide Browse Congress by state, party and chamber
Why is a member I am looking for not in the list?
The directory shows members in office. A member who has left office does not appear in it, but their page still exists. Search for their full name to reach it.
From the guide Browse Congress by state, party and chamber
What do the letters R, D and I mean?
R is Republican, D is Democrat and I is Independent. They appear as small marks beside a member's name and in vote counts, in red, blue and purple. Hover over a round mark to see the party's full name.
From the guide Politics: Congress, bills, votes and elections
Is Politics an official government site?
No. It reads official public records and shows them in one place, with the news around them. Every vote page links to the House Clerk or Senate record, and every bill page links to Congress.gov. When the two differ, the official record governs.
From the guide Politics: Congress, bills, votes and elections
Do I need an account to use Politics?
No. Everything in Politics works without signing in. If you choose to follow members, bills and other things, your list is kept in your browser, not in an account. See Follow what matters to you.
From the guide Politics: Congress, bills, votes and elections
Are the percentages predictions?
They are the market's implied chance, taken from what traders are paying, not a forecast by 4Search. A market can be wrong, and the numbers can change quickly.
From the guide Prediction markets in Politics: how to read the odds
Can I place a bet or trade on Politics?
No. Politics only shows the markets. The exchange's website, which the card links to, is where a market is traded.
From the guide Prediction markets in Politics: how to read the odds
Why do two markets on the same question show different numbers?
They can trade on different exchanges, word the question a little differently or be updated at different moments. Each card names its source and says when it was last updated.
From the guide Prediction markets in Politics: how to read the odds
What do the arrows mean?
They show how many points the chance moved over the last day: green for up, red for down. A card shows no arrow when the change is under half a point.
From the guide Prediction markets in Politics: how to read the odds
Why does my Following page say a market is no longer found?
The page lists what it can no longer find, such as a market that has closed, and offers to remove it from your list.
From the guide Prediction markets in Politics: how to read the odds
Where are the Fed and economy markets?
Choose Fed & economy on the Prediction Markets page. Their cards usually open a page in Finance.
From the guide Prediction markets in Politics: how to read the odds
Why does the page say there is no prediction market?
No open market on that race is on record yet. The page still shows who holds the seat and any coverage of the race. A new market appears when one opens.
From the guide Read a race's page: odds, names and news
Why are there several markets on one race?
Exchanges offer more than one question on the same contest: who wins, by how much, how many people vote, or how a pair of races will turn out. Each is a separate market with its own numbers.
From the guide Read a race's page: odds, names and news
Why do two markets on the same race show different chances?
They can ask slightly different questions, trade on different exchanges and be updated at different moments. Each card shows its source and when it was last updated.
From the guide Read a race's page: odds, names and news
What does "Seat up in 2026" mean?
It means the senator's current term ends in January after the 2026 election, so the seat is on the ballot this November. The other senator from the state shows the year their term ends.
From the guide Read a race's page: odds, names and news
How do I comment on a proposed rule?
Comments are filed at regulations.gov, not here. Open the rule from this page to read its official text, which explains how to comment, and note the Comments close date.
From the guide Find new federal rules and proposed rules open for comment
What is the difference between a proposed rule and a final rule?
A proposed rule is an agency's draft, published so the public can comment. A final rule is the version the agency has adopted. A final rule has an Effective date, when it starts to apply.
From the guide Find new federal rules and proposed rules open for comment
What does Significant mean?
The rule is one the Office of Management and Budget reviews under Executive Order 12866 because it has large economic effects or raises novel policy.
From the guide Find new federal rules and proposed rules open for comment
Does Politics list every notice the Federal Register publishes?
No. Politics lists rules and proposed rules, and the President's documents on the Executive Actions page. It leaves out the Federal Register's many routine agency notices.
From the guide Find new federal rules and proposed rules open for comment
Why can I not see the comments other people filed?
Politics shows the rules, not the comment files. Those are kept at regulations.gov.
From the guide Find new federal rules and proposed rules open for comment
Why did I land on a bill or a member instead of a list of results?
A full name or a bill number that matches one record opens that record directly. To see a results page instead, type only part of the name, or use the Search link in the In the news card on a member's page.
From the guide Search Politics for a member, a bill, a vote or a topic
Can I find my representative by ZIP code or street address?
No. Politics lists members by state and district; it does not turn an address into a district. Choose your state in Members and look for your district number, such as TX-7. If you do not know your district, the House of Representatives' own website has a lookup by ZIP code or address.
From the guide Search Politics for a member, a bill, a vote or a topic
Can I look up a bill from an earlier Congress?
No. Politics covers the current Congress. A bill number from an earlier Congress has no page here, so you get a results page instead.
From the guide Search Politics for a member, a bill, a vote or a topic
Why does a bill show up when its title does not contain my words?
Bills are searched by their title, their summary, their subjects and their policy area, so a bill can match on any of them.
From the guide Search Politics for a member, a bill, a vote or a topic
How is this different from the Topics tab?
The Topics tab covers every subject the site follows. The topics in Politics are the Politics and Law & Government topics from that set, shown inside Politics. For how topics work across the site, see Topics.

What does "Required: 3/5" mean?
It is the share of the votes needed for the question to succeed. For most questions it is a simple majority, shown as 1/2 (simple majority). Some need more: 2/3 for a House vote to suspend the rules, and 3/5 for a Senate vote to end debate on a bill, as the record states.
From the guide Read a vote: the result, the party split and every member's answer
Why do I see "against party" next to a name?
That member voted Yea or Nay the opposite way from most of their own party on this roll call. It says how their vote compared with their party's, not why they voted as they did.
From the guide Read a vote: the result, the party split and every member's answer
Why can I not open a senator's name?
A few names on a Senate roll call cannot be matched to a member record. Their answer is still counted, but the name is not a link.
From the guide Read a vote: the result, the party split and every member's answer
How does Politics decide who "most of their party" is?
It looks at the Yea and Nay answers of each party on that roll call and takes the side with more votes. An independent is compared with the party they caucus with.
From the guide Read a vote: the result, the party split and every member's answer
Where does the vote come from?
From the House Clerk for House votes and the U.S. Senate for Senate votes. The Source card on the page links to that record.
From the guide Read a vote: the result, the party split and every member's answer
Why is the newest vote weeks old?
The House and Senate hold recorded votes only while they are in session. During a recess there are no new ones. The overview says when each chamber last voted, and new roll calls appear within about ten minutes of the House Clerk or the Senate publishing them.
From the guide Find a roll-call vote
What does "Party-line" mean here?
A vote counts as party-line when most Republicans voted one way and most Democrats voted the other. The page does not mean that every member of a party voted together.
From the guide Find a roll-call vote
Why do the yeas and nays not add up to every member?
Members who answered Present or did not vote are not in the tally. The vote page shows those counts too.

Predictions
Can I bet or trade on 4Search?
No. Predictions shows the odds traders give on four prediction-market venues, the money behind them and the news. Trading happens on the venues themselves, under their own terms. A market's venue chip opens the market on the venue's site. Nothing on Predictions is betting, financial or investment advice.
Are the odds on Predictions 4Search's own forecasts?
No. They are the prices traders pay on Kalshi, Polymarket, ForecastEx and Crypto.com, read every few minutes and shown as each market's chance. 4Search does not adjust them or average venues. See How to read prediction market odds.
How current are prediction-market prices?
The venues' prices are read every few minutes, so a number can be a few minutes behind. Each Predictions page says when the prices were last read. See The venues Predictions brings together.
Why is a market from another prediction site not on Predictions?
Predictions reads four venues: Kalshi, Polymarket, ForecastEx and Crypto.com. Markets that only another site lists are not included.
Is it the same odds in Finance and in Predictions?
For a market on Kalshi or Polymarket, they come from the same venue and are worked out the same way, so they agree apart from timing: each page reads the venue every few minutes. The pages around the odds differ.
From the guide Prediction markets in Finance, Politics and search
Which one should I use?
Use the one that suits what you are doing. Finance is best when you are looking at a price, Politics when you are following a race or a bill, and Predictions when you want the whole picture of a market or to browse by subject.
From the guide Prediction markets in Finance, Politics and search
Can I follow a market from Finance or Politics?

How far ahead does the calendar look?
It covers the next seven days: markets that close within a week.
From the guide See what gets decided, day by day
Why is a game I know about missing?
The calendar lists the busiest markets of each day, and a game with little money on it may not make the list. Search for it, or look in its sport under Sports. See Browse markets by topic.
From the guide See what gets decided, day by day
What time zone is the calendar in?
Eastern time, which every time on Predictions uses. A game listed at 9:00 PM starts at 9 PM in New York.
From the guide See what gets decided, day by day
Does a gap mean one venue is wrong?
No. It can mean the traders on each venue see the question differently, that the markets are not quite the same, or that the prices were read at different moments. Open both markets and read their rules.
From the guide Compare the same question across venues
Why is a question I know is on two venues not here?
It may not have been matched, the gap may be under two points (so it is not in Furthest apart), or the game may already have started, which drops it from the page. Open one of the markets: if the other venue asks the same question, its page has a The same question on box.
From the guide Compare the same question across venues
Why are three or four venues shown for some questions?
When more than two venues ask the same question, every venue's number is shown, and the gap is between the two farthest apart.
From the guide Compare the same question across venues

Can I follow a market on my phone and see it on my computer?
No. The list is in one browser. Follow it again where you want to see it.

Where does the news come from?
From the 4Search news index: headlines from many outlets, in English. Select a headline to open the outlet's article in a new tab.
From the guide The news behind the odds
Why does a market have no headlines?
Nothing recent named its subject. A new or niche market may have none.
From the guide The news behind the odds
Does more money mean the number is right?
No. More money means more attention and usually a steadier price, not a correct one. A heavily traded market can still be wrong. Track Record shows how often markets' favorites have won.
From the guide See where the money is on the leaderboard
Why do some big markets appear on more than one board?
The boards ask different questions. A market can have the most money today and also be among the closest calls.
From the guide See where the money is on the leaderboard
Why does a game show up on Most money today but not Most money ever?
Most money ever counts what has traded since a market opened, among markets that are still open. A game that started today has traded a lot today but has little total yet compared with a long-running championship market.
From the guide See where the money is on the leaderboard
What is the difference between Traded and At stake?
Traded is all the money that has changed hands since the market opened. At stake is what traders hold in open contracts right now.
From the guide See where the money is on the leaderboard
Why does the chart say "Not enough history yet"?
Predictions has followed the market only briefly, so there are too few readings to draw. Try a longer period, or come back later.
From the guide Read a market's page
Can I zoom in on the chart?
There is no zoom. Choose 1W, 1M, 3M or All, and point at the chart to read exact values.
From the guide Read a market's page
What do the dots on the chart mean?
Each dot is a headline that names the market's subject, placed at the time it was published. A cluster of dots means a busy news period. See The news behind the odds.
From the guide Read a market's page
Why can the same market appear in Finance or Politics too?
Each service keeps its own page for a market, with its own context. They show the same odds. See Prediction markets in Finance, Politics and search.
From the guide Read a market's page
Why is a market I know moved a lot not here?
It may close within a day, have too little money on it or have moved by less than the lists show. Open its page to see its chart.
From the guide See which odds moved the most
Are these predictions of what will happen next?
No. They show what has already changed. Past moves do not tell you where a price goes next, and nothing here is advice.
From the guide See which odds moved the most
How long do results stay on the page?
The page lists what settled in about the last three weeks, up to 40 results. Older results drop off the list.
From the guide New markets, resolved markets and upsets
Why does a result show a chance of 99% or more for the winner?
Some markets are all but decided before they close. The chance shown is the one traders gave the winning outcome a day before it closed.
From the guide New markets, resolved markets and upsets
What is the difference between closed and settled?
Closed means trading has ended. Settled means the venue has decided the result. A market that has closed but is not yet decided says Closed, awaiting its result on its page.
From the guide New markets, resolved markets and upsets
Does the switch change the money figures?
No. Dollars traded, the money at stake and prices of stocks stay as they are. Only chances change.
From the guide Show odds as percentages, American odds or decimal odds
Why do some numbers stay as percentages?
Changes in the last day are always points, such as ▲ 5, and a figure that is not a chance, such as a median price, is shown as itself. Only chances are rewritten.
From the guide Show odds as percentages, American odds or decimal odds
Is American odds advice to bet at those odds?
No. The odds are a different way of writing the market's chance. Nothing on Predictions is betting, financial or investment advice.
From the guide Show odds as percentages, American odds or decimal odds
Where is the switch on my phone?
On a phone the three buttons sit directly under the page's introduction, with the note about when prices were read. They appear once the page has finished loading.
From the guide Show odds as percentages, American odds or decimal odds
Is Predictions betting?
No. Predictions only shows the odds and the news. You cannot place a trade on 4Search. Each market has a chip with the venue's name that opens the same market on the venue's own site in a new tab, where the venue's own terms and rules apply.
From the guide Predictions, the odds prediction markets give
Do I need an account to use Predictions?
No. You can read every page without signing in. If you follow markets, your list is kept in your browser, not in an account. See Follow markets.
From the guide Predictions, the odds prediction markets give
Are the odds a forecast from 4Search?
No. They are the venues' prices, and 4Search does not adjust them. Where more than one venue asks the same question, each one's number is shown, never an average. See The venues Predictions brings together.
From the guide Predictions, the odds prediction markets give
Why does a page say "Prices read 9 min ago"?
The page reads prices from the venues every few minutes rather than live, so a number can be a few minutes behind. The note beside the odds switch tells you how long ago the last reading was.
From the guide Predictions, the odds prediction markets give
Where is Predictions on my site?
It is a tab in the row at the top of the page, between Politics and Weather. If your site has no Predictions tab, it does not have the service; The 4 Network explains which sites have which services.
From the guide Predictions, the odds prediction markets give
Does 70% mean it will happen?
No. It means traders pay about 70¢ for a $1 contract. Over many questions priced at 70%, a well-calibrated market sees about seven in ten happen, and Track Record shows how that has held up here. A 70% question still fails three times in ten.
From the guide How to read prediction market odds
Why does the same question show different numbers on two venues?
Each venue has its own traders, its own rules and its own moment of last trade. Predictions shows every venue's number and never averages them. See Compare venues.
From the guide How to read prediction market odds
Is At stake the same as Traded?
No. Traded is everything that has changed hands since the market opened. At stake is what traders hold right now, so it can be much smaller than the total traded.
From the guide How to read prediction market odds
What do the arrows mean?
▲ and ▼ show how far a chance moved, in percentage points, over the last day (or the last week on the weekly lists). A green arrow up is a rise and a red arrow down is a fall.
From the guide How to read prediction market odds
What is a contract?
It is what you buy on the venue: a promise that pays $1 if the outcome happens and nothing if it does not. Predictions does not sell contracts.
From the guide How to read prediction market odds
Why did I get no suggestions?
Suggestions start after two letters and show only markets that are open. A name that does not appear in any open market's question or answers shows nothing. Press Enter to run the full search, which also checks the news.
From the guide Search prediction markets
Does the search find markets that have settled?
The suggestions and the lists on Predictions are open markets. To see what recently settled, open Resolved.
From the guide Search prediction markets
Why is there no Prediction markets box above my search?
The box appears only for a short search whose words match the question or answers of an open market that people are actively trading. Most searches have none, which is expected.
From the guide Search prediction markets
Can I search from the Predictions box for something that is not a market, like a place?
No. Weather has its own search for places. See Find the weather for a place.
From the guide Search prediction markets
Why does a market show a price it is not exactly about?
A market can be linked to prices that it moves or that track its subject, such as a fund that follows an index. On the price's own page, the group heading, such as On what it tracks or What moves it, says how the market is related.
From the guide Stocks, rates and coins that markets are about
Why is a price missing or shown as a dash?
The latest price is not available for that item at the moment. The markets about it are still listed.
From the guide Stocks, rates and coins that markets are about
Where do I look up the company itself?
Open the item's page in 4Search Finance from the link beside its price. See Finance.
From the guide Stocks, rates and coins that markets are about
Why is a market filed under a topic I did not expect?
Markets are filed by the venue's own categories and by their titles, and some questions fit more than one topic. If you cannot find a market in a topic, search for it. See Search prediction markets.
From the guide Browse markets by topic
What are Mentions markets?
Questions about what someone will say, such as whether a speaker will use a certain word in a rally or an earnings call. Each outcome is a word or phrase, sometimes with a count such as 3+ times, and its chance is that it is said.
From the guide Browse markets by topic
Why does a topic show fewer markets than I expected?
Each venue chooses what to list, and Predictions leaves out some kinds of market, such as the side bets on a game (spreads, totals and player props). The count beside a subtopic is the markets that are open now.
From the guide Browse markets by topic
Can I see only one venue?
Yes. Use the venue menu on a topic page. It changes only that list.
From the guide Browse markets by topic
What does a Brier score of 0.1 mean?
The chances were, on average, close to what happened. A score of 0 would mean every outcome was priced at 100% or 0% and went the way it was priced. A score of 0.25 is what you would get by calling everything 50%.
From the guide Track Record, how accurate prediction markets have been
Why is a topic or venue missing from By topic?
A group needs at least ten outcomes before it is listed.
From the guide Track Record, how accurate prediction markets have been
Does a dot below the dashed line mean the markets were wrong?
It means that, for that tenth of the scale, the outcomes happened less often than their chances said. With few outcomes in a tenth, a dot can sit off the line by chance.
From the guide Track Record, how accurate prediction markets have been
Is the record for all prediction markets?
No. It is for the markets that 4Search followed to a result, and only the kinds described above.
From the guide Track Record, how accurate prediction markets have been
Which venue is the best one?
Predictions does not rank them. Each lists different questions and has its own rules; follow a chip to the venue's site to read them.
From the guide The venues Predictions brings together
Can I place a trade from Predictions?
No. A chip opens the market on the venue's own site, where its own terms apply.
From the guide The venues Predictions brings together
Why is a market on only one venue?
Each venue chooses what to list, so many questions appear on one venue only and there is nothing to compare.
From the guide The venues Predictions brings together
Why does a venue's number differ from the one on its own site?
Predictions reads each venue's prices every few minutes, so a number can be slightly behind. The chip's pointer note says how long ago the price was read.
From the guide The venues Predictions brings together
Does Predictions add up the money from every venue?
Where a number covers several venues, such as the money by topic on the overview, it is the venues' dollars added together, with Kalshi's and ForecastEx's estimated from contracts. A single market's money is always that venue's own.
From the guide The venues Predictions brings together
Weather
Does 4Search make its own weather forecasts?
No. In the United States, forecasts, current conditions and alerts come from the National Weather Service. Elsewhere, forecasts come from MET Norway. Weather shows each with its source and how old it is. See Where the weather comes from and how fresh it is.
Can I rely on Weather for severe weather warnings?
Use it for information, not as your warning service. Alerts are copied from the National Weather Service on a schedule and can be minutes behind. For warnings that affect your safety, follow your local National Weather Service office and emergency officials. See Weather alerts.
Does Weather know where I am?
Only if you ask. Use my location asks your browser's permission and uses your position once to find the nearest place, without storing it. Without a home place, the overview may show weather near the approximate location of your connection, for that page only. See Use your location for a forecast.
Why does Weather open on a different place than I expected?
It opens on your home place if you set one in this browser. To change it, select Set as home on another place's page. See Set a home place.
Why is there no air quality box for my place?
The box needs a reporting area nearby, and it is shown for places in the United States. Places without one do not have it.
From the guide Air quality and the UV index
Why does the air quality look fine when it is smoky outside?
The index is reported for an area, at intervals, and the reading can be an hour or more old. Conditions can change faster than the report.
From the guide Air quality and the UV index
Where does the UV index come from?
From MET Norway's forecast, for places in the United States and elsewhere. See Where the weather comes from.
From the guide Air quality and the UV index
Why does my place show no alert when there is one nearby?
An alert covers named zones and counties. If yours is not among them, it is not shown for your place. Open the Alerts page for your state to see everything near you.
From the guide Weather alerts, watches, warnings and advisories
Does 4Search send alerts to my phone?
No. Weather shows alerts when you open a page. For alerts sent to you, use the official alerting services on your phone and from your local officials.
From the guide Weather alerts, watches, warnings and advisories
Why does the radar show colored areas?
With the Warnings layer on, the radar map draws the areas under active watches, warnings and advisories in their colors. See Use the radar map.
From the guide Weather alerts, watches, warnings and advisories
Are alerts shown for places outside the United States?
No. Alerts come from the National Weather Service and cover the United States and its territories.
From the guide Weather alerts, watches, warnings and advisories
Does 4Search change the forecasts?
No. Forecasts, alerts and readings are shown as the sources give them. Weather converts units and writes the forecast in words for places outside the U.S. from MET Norway's figures.
From the guide Where the weather comes from and how fresh it is
Why does Weather's forecast differ from another weather site's?
Other sites may use different sources or their own forecasts, and update at different times. Weather shows the National Weather Service's forecast for U.S. places.
From the guide Where the weather comes from and how fresh it is
Why is a reading an hour old?
Stations report at intervals, often hourly. The note under the current conditions says how old the reading is.
From the guide Where the weather comes from and how fresh it is
Can I search by street address?
No. Weather looks up ZIP codes, towns and cities, and coordinates. A ZIP code gives the forecast for that area.
From the guide Find the weather for a place
Why did I get a ZIP code's page when I typed coordinates?
Coordinates open the nearest ZIP code in the United States, or the nearest city elsewhere, since forecasts are made for those places.
From the guide Find the weather for a place
Why does a city name list many places instead of opening one?
Several places share the name and none is clearly the one most people mean. Add a state or country, or choose from the list.
From the guide Find the weather for a place
Is following a place the same as setting it as home?
No. Your home place is the one Weather opens on. Followed places are shown together on My places. A place can be both.
From the guide Follow places and see them together
Why does My places say it needs cookies?
Following is kept in your browser, which needs the optional Saved preferences choice. The page offers a button to turn it on.
From the guide Follow places and see them together
Why does a card say the forecast is loading?
Its forecast is being fetched. Check back in a minute.
From the guide Follow places and see them together
Do the cards show alerts?
Yes. A card names the alerts in effect for the place, with a link to them.
From the guide Follow places and see them together
Can my home place be outside the United States?
Yes. Any place with a Weather page can be your home place.
From the guide Set a home place
Does my home place follow me to my phone?
No. It is kept in the browser where you set it. Set it again on your phone.
From the guide Set a home place
Is my home place the same as the places I follow?
No. You have one home place, and you can follow up to 30 other places on My places. See Follow places.
From the guide Set a home place
Why does the overview say "Near you" instead of "Your home"?
No home place is set in this browser, so the overview shows weather near the approximate location your connection suggests. Set a home place to keep one.
From the guide Set a home place
Why does the hourly table start part-way through the day?
It starts at the current hour in the place's time. Earlier hours are not repeated.
From the guide Hourly and 10-day forecasts
Which way is the wind blowing?
The letters give the direction the wind comes from, so W 5 is a west wind at 5 mph. The arrow beside them points the way the wind is blowing, which is the opposite way.
From the guide Hourly and 10-day forecasts
Why are some columns missing from the table?
Snow and UV appear only when the forecast has something to show in them.
From the guide Hourly and 10-day forecasts
What does "Amount" mean?
The forecast depth of liquid for that hour: rain, or the water in snow. The 10-Day boxes show snowfall as snow depth.
From the guide Hourly and 10-day forecasts
Why do the last days of the 10-day list look less exact?
They come from a computer model rather than forecasters, and forecasts lose accuracy the further ahead they look.
From the guide Hourly and 10-day forecasts
Why is a storm in the western Pacific or Indian Ocean not listed?
The page follows the storms the National Hurricane Center tracks: the Atlantic and the eastern and central Pacific. Storms elsewhere may still appear in the tropics news.
From the guide Track hurricanes and tropical storms
What does the cone mean?
It is where the center of the storm is likely to travel. It does not show the size of the storm or where its wind, rain and surge will be felt.
From the guide Track hurricanes and tropical storms
Where are the warnings for my area?
Hurricane and tropical storm watches and warnings are National Weather Service alerts. See Weather alerts.
From the guide Track hurricanes and tropical storms
Why is a map missing?
The outlook and cone maps come from the National Hurricane Center. If one cannot be loaded, the page leaves it out.
From the guide Track hurricanes and tropical storms
What are normals?
They are the average high, low and rain for a date over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. A day that is warmer than normal is above that average.
From the guide The monthly calendar, what each day did
Why do the numbers differ from my own thermometer?
The calendar uses the nearest long-record climate station, which can be some distance away and at a different elevation.
From the guide The monthly calendar, what each day did
Why does a past day have no rain figure?
Nothing measurable fell, or the station has not reported it yet. Recent days are preliminary.
From the guide The monthly calendar, what each day did
Why is the Monthly tab missing for my place?
Monthly is for places in the United States. See Read a place's forecast page for what places elsewhere have.
From the guide The monthly calendar, what each day did
Why does a story look out of date?
The page lists coverage from the last few days, newest first. A long-running story may have older articles near newer ones.
From the guide Weather news
Why is there no news for my place?
Nothing recent in the index named it. The box then shows national weather news instead, or is left out.
From the guide Weather news
Can I filter the news on a place's page?
No. Use the filters on the Weather news page.
From the guide Weather news
Do I need an account or to sign in?
No. You can use every Weather page without signing in. A home place and the places you follow are kept in your browser. See Set a home place.
From the guide Weather, your forecast, radar and alerts in one place
Does Weather work outside the United States?
Yes, for cities around the world. Places outside the U.S. have a Today page, an Hourly page, a 10-Day page and a Radar page that shows satellite imagery. The Monthly and Alerts tabs and the air quality box are for U.S. places.
From the guide Weather, your forecast, radar and alerts in one place
Does it show my location automatically?
Not unless you ask. You can select Use my location, and your browser asks permission first. Without a home place, the overview may show weather near the approximate location your connection suggests, and says so. See Use your location.
From the guide Weather, your forecast, radar and alerts in one place
Why is a forecast older than I expected?
Each page shows when its data was last updated, for example "National Weather Service forecast updated 10 hrs ago". The National Weather Service issues its forecasts on its own schedule.
From the guide Weather, your forecast, radar and alerts in one place
Why does the reading come from a different place than the one I searched?
It comes from the nearest station that reports. The note under the box names it. Stations are often at airports.
From the guide Read a place's forecast page
Why does "Feels like" differ from the temperature?
It accounts for humidity when it is hot and wind when it is cold. When neither applies, it matches the temperature.
From the guide Read a place's forecast page
Why does the hourly strip show no chance of rain for some hours?
A chance is shown only when it is 10% or more. A blank means it is lower.
From the guide Read a place's forecast page
How often is the page updated?
Each box says how old it is. See Where the weather comes from and how fresh it is.
From the guide Read a place's forecast page
Is this page a warning service?
No. For warnings that affect your safety, follow your local National Weather Service office and emergency officials. See Weather alerts.
From the guide Read a place's forecast page
Is the radar a forecast?
No. It shows what has already been detected over the last two hours. A forecast says what is expected next.
From the guide Use the radar map
Why is a part of the map blank?
There may be no precipitation there, or no radar covers it. The radar mosaic covers the United States and some of its territories.
From the guide Use the radar map
Why is there no time bar or play button?
The bar appears when the Radar layer is on and the map has the list of picture times. If the layer is off, or the list could not be loaded, the bar is hidden. Turn Radar on, or reload the page.
From the guide Use the radar map
Why can't I zoom with my mouse wheel on a small map?
The wheel scrolls the page unless you click the map first or hold Ctrl. A message on the map says so.
From the guide Use the radar map
What do the colors mean?
They run from light (blue, green) to heavy (yellow, orange, red) to the most intense (magenta), as the scale on the map shows.
From the guide Use the radar map
Why is my town not in the table?
The table lists the biggest cities. Look in More places, or search for your town.
From the guide Browse weather by state and country
Why are the temperatures on a country's page in Celsius?
A country's page uses that country's own units. A place's page has a °F and °C switch. See Switch between °F and °C.
From the guide Browse weather by state and country
Where is the Overview's list of world cities?
The Around the world box on the Weather overview lists major cities elsewhere with their temperature now. Select one to open its forecast.
From the guide Browse weather by state and country
Does the choice change Maps or Predictions?
No. It applies to Weather pages and the weather box above search results.
From the guide Switch between °F and °C
Why did my units change back?
If Saved preferences is off, the choice lasts only until you close the browser. Clearing this site's cookies also resets it.
From the guide Switch between °F and °C
Why does a page show °F for a place in Europe?
Your browser's region is the United States, so Weather starts in U.S. units. Select °C to switch.
From the guide Switch between °F and °C
Why does Weather open a ZIP code instead of my town?
In the United States, the forecast is for the nearest ZIP code to your position. Its page names the town the ZIP code belongs to.
From the guide Use your location for a forecast
Is my location saved?
No. It is used to find the nearest place and is not kept. Only a home place that you choose is remembered, and only in your browser. See Saved preferences.
From the guide Use your location for a forecast
Why is the place a little off?
Your browser's location can be approximate, especially on a computer without GPS. If the nearest place is not the one you want, search for it by name or use the Nearby list on the forecast page.
From the guide Use your location for a forecast
Does it work on a computer?
Yes, if your browser can find your location. The result may be less exact than on a phone.
From the guide Use your location for a forecast
Why did my search not show a weather box?
The box needs a weather word (weather, forecast, radar or temperature) and a place Weather can find. Searches about other things that use the word, such as a weather app or a weather station for sale, do not get one. If the place has several matches, add a state or country, such as springfield il weather.
From the guide Weather in your search results
Does the box appear on every 4Search site?
Only on the sites that have Weather.
From the guide Weather in your search results
Is the box as up to date as the Weather page?
It shows when it was updated, usually a few minutes ago. The place's own page has the full detail.
From the guide Weather in your search results
Maps
Does Maps cover the whole world?
The map, search, place pages and the country, city and town pages cover the whole world. The sharpest satellite pictures exist only in some countries, and the weather radar, wildfire and air-quality maps cover mostly the United States. If Maps cannot work out a route between two places, it tells you instead of drawing one.
Do I need to install anything to use Maps?
No. Maps runs in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. If you have installed 4Search as an app, Maps opens from its Maps tab like any other page.
Does Maps work offline?
No. The map, its pictures and searches load as you use them, so Maps needs an internet connection.
Is Maps the same on every site that has it?
Yes. The same map, search, directions and map types appear on each site that offers Maps; only the site's name and colors around it differ. Your saved places, though, are kept separately by each site in your browser.
Why does "Show your location" not work?
Your browser must be allowed to share your location with the site. If you said no, change it in your browser's site settings, then try again. Some computers have no location hardware and give only a rough position.
From the guide Map controls and gestures
Is my location sent anywhere?
Showing yourself on the map happens in your browser. When you use your location as the start of a route, the position goes to 4Search to work out the route, with nothing that identifies you.
From the guide Map controls and gestures
How do I get the map flat again?
Select the compass (Reset to north), which turns it to north and flattens it, or the tilt button.
From the guide Map controls and gestures
Can I make the map bigger?
Hide the side panel with the small arrow on its edge, or make the browser window full screen.
From the guide Map controls and gestures
Can I use the maps or pictures somewhere else?
Each source has its own licence, listed on About these maps. OpenStreetMap data, for example, is open with credit to its contributors. Check the licence of the part you want to reuse.
From the guide Map data, credits and fixing mistakes
Why is a new road missing?
OpenStreetMap is updated by volunteers, and new roads take time to be added and to reach Maps. You can add it yourself through Report a map error.
From the guide Map data, credits and fixing mistakes
Is Maps affiliated with OpenStreetMap?
No. Maps uses OpenStreetMap's open data, as many websites and apps do, and credits it as its licence asks.
From the guide Map data, credits and fixing mistakes
What is an H100-equivalent?
A way of comparing AI computing power: the number of NVIDIA H100 chips that would give the same performance. Epoch AI, which publishes the estimates, converts other chips into this unit so different sites can be compared.
From the guide The data center map
Why is my local data center missing?
It may not be mapped in OpenStreetMap or listed in the other sources yet. If you know where it is, you can add it to OpenStreetMap; the map picks up new sites when its data is refreshed.
From the guide The data center map
Why is a cloud region shown in the middle of a city?
Cloud providers publish the city or area of each region, not the address of its buildings, so the dot marks the city.
From the guide The data center map
How often is the data updated?
Each source is refreshed regularly on its own schedule, so a newly announced site can take a while to appear.
From the guide The data center map
Does Maps have public transit directions?
No. Directions are for driving, walking and cycling. The Transit map shows subway, rail and tram lines and their stations, which helps you plan a trip by transit yourself.
From the guide Get directions by car, on foot or by bike
Can I get directions for a truck, a bus or a wheelchair?
No. There are three ways to travel: drive, walk and bike.
From the guide Get directions by car, on foot or by bike
How many stops can I add?
Up to ten places in all, the start and the destination included.
From the guide Get directions by car, on foot or by bike
Can I send the directions to my phone?
Select Share to copy a link to the directions and send it to yourself however you like. On your phone, the link opens the same route.
From the guide Get directions by car, on foot or by bike
Why does my search for "pizza" find nothing?
A kind-of-place search looks only in the area on the map. If you are zoomed out over a whole state, or the map shows the open sea, there may be nothing in view, and the panel says so. Zoom in on a town, or add a place: pizza near providence.
From the guide Find places and addresses on the map
Why are some well-known businesses missing?
The map comes from OpenStreetMap, which volunteers keep up. A place that nobody has added, or added without its category, will not show up in a kind-of-place search. Try searching for it by name, and consider adding it to OpenStreetMap.
From the guide Find places and addresses on the map
What is a plus code?
A short code, such as 87JC9W5R+93, for a spot about 14 meters across, free to use anywhere in the world. Every place page shows one, with a button to copy it. People use them where streets have no addresses.
From the guide Find places and addresses on the map
The list says a place is closed, but it is open. Why?
Opening hours come from OpenStreetMap and may be out of date. Check the place's own website or call before you go; both are on its page when the map has them.
From the guide Find places and addresses on the map
Why did the Dark map turn on by itself?
The Default map follows the site's color theme. If you chose the Dark theme for the site, the street map is dark too. See Themes.
From the guide The Layers menu
Why did a layer I turned on disappear when I chose another map type in the ribbon?
Each type in the ribbon turns on what it needs and turns it off again when you move to the next type. Layers you turn on yourself in this menu stay on until you turn them off.
From the guide The Layers menu
Why can't I see 3D buildings?
Zoom in on a city: buildings rise only close up. They are also hidden while the Satellite map type is on, and only buildings whose height is recorded in OpenStreetMap stand up.
From the guide The Layers menu
Why is there no radar over my country?
The radar layer covers the United States and its territories only. Clouds now covers the whole world.
From the guide Live maps: weather radar, earthquakes, wildfires and air quality
How often do the live maps update?
Earthquakes every few minutes and air quality hourly, as their sources publish them. Reload the page to fetch the latest.
From the guide Live maps: weather radar, earthquakes, wildfires and air quality
Why does a wildfire have no outline?
Only fires whose perimeter has been mapped and published show an outline. The others appear as a circle at their reported location.
From the guide Live maps: weather radar, earthquakes, wildfires and air quality
Can I see earthquakes older than a week?
No. The map shows the past seven days. The USGS event page linked from each quake has its history and more detail.
From the guide Live maps: weather radar, earthquakes, wildfires and air quality
How old are the satellite pictures?
It depends on the source: each country renews its aerial photos on its own schedule, and the world mosaic is from 2021. None of them is live, so a new building may not show yet.
From the guide Types of map: satellite, terrain, 3D, transit, cycling and more
Why does the satellite picture get blurry when I zoom in?
In places without national aerial photos, Maps uses a world mosaic in which each dot covers about 10 meters. Zooming in further enlarges the same dots. In the United States and the countries listed above, you can zoom in much closer.
From the guide Types of map: satellite, terrain, 3D, transit, cycling and more
Can I see a street from the sidewalk, like a street view?
Where Panoramax contributors have taken photos, yes: turn on Street-level photos and select a blue line. Coverage is good in parts of Europe and thin in many other places.
From the guide Types of map: satellite, terrain, 3D, transit, cycling and more
Why do I see no colored subway lines in my city?
The Transit map draws only what OpenStreetMap volunteers have tagged as subway, tram or light rail. Where they have not, you still see the railways and stations.
From the guide Types of map: satellite, terrain, 3D, transit, cycling and more
Is Maps free?
Yes. Searching, directions and every map type are free to use, with nothing to sign up for.
From the guide Maps: search places, get directions and explore the world
Does Maps have live traffic?
No. Travel times assume normal traffic and no delays. Check road signs and conditions as you go.
From the guide Maps: search places, get directions and explore the world
Can I use Maps without allowing anything?
Yes. Everything works. Only saving places, remembering recent searches and remembering your choice of miles or kilometers need Saved preferences.
From the guide Maps: search places, get directions and explore the world
Why do I see a message instead of the map?
The map needs a browser that can draw 3D graphics (WebGL), and JavaScript turned on. When either is missing, the map area says so, and the side panel still works: you can search, read place pages and get directions as text. If the message says the map could not load, check your connection and reload the page.
From the guide Maps: search places, get directions and explore the world
Why does a place have no hours or phone number?
Its page shows only what OpenStreetMap volunteers have recorded. Many small businesses have a name and an address but no hours yet.
From the guide Place pages: what Maps shows about a place
Are the hours always right?
No. They are as current as the last volunteer edit. Check the place's own website, or call, before a long trip.
From the guide Place pages: what Maps shows about a place
Why is the local time different from my clock?
It is the time where the place is. A place in another time zone shows its own time and its difference from UTC.
From the guide Place pages: what Maps shows about a place
Can I copy the coordinates in another format?
The page shows decimal degrees (42.35843, -71.05977) and degrees, minutes and seconds. The copy button copies the decimal form, which almost every map and GPS device accepts.
From the guide Place pages: what Maps shows about a place
Why is there no photo of the place?
The photo at the top comes from Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, and only places with one there show it.
From the guide Place pages: what Maps shows about a place
Where do the country facts come from?
From GeoNames, an open geographical database, credited at the foot of each country page. The summaries come from Wikipedia.
From the guide Countries, states and the world
Why does a small town have no outline?
Outlines are drawn for cities and towns with at least a thousand people, and for states and countries. Smaller places show a pin.
From the guide Countries, states and the world
Why does "Directions" to a country go to one spot?
Directions need a point, so Maps uses the middle of the area on the map. For a real trip, choose a city or an address as your destination.
From the guide Countries, states and the world
Do I need an account to save places?
No. There are no accounts. Your places live in the browser where you saved them.
From the guide Save places and keep your own lists
Will my saved places appear on my phone?
No. Each browser keeps its own list. To copy your places across, download them on one device and keep the file; Maps itself cannot import them.
From the guide Save places and keep your own lists
How many places can I save?
Up to 500.
From the guide Save places and keep your own lists
Why did my saved places disappear?
Either Saved preferences were turned off, which deletes them, or the browser's data for the site was cleared (private windows clear it when you close them).
From the guide Save places and keep your own lists
Can I name a place myself?
Not at the moment. A saved place keeps the name shown on its page; a dropped pin keeps its street address.
From the guide Save places and keep your own lists
Why is the area not a circle?
Because you travel along roads and paths, not in a straight line. Fast roads stretch the area out along them; water, railways and missing bridges pinch it in.
From the guide Travel times: how far can you get in 10, 20 or 30 minutes?
Does it include traffic or public transit?
No. It assumes normal traffic, and it covers driving, cycling and walking only.
From the guide Travel times: how far can you get in 10, 20 or 30 minutes?
Why do I get a message that travel times are not available?
They depend on the same service as directions. If it is busy, try again in a minute; if the message says travel times are not available on this server, the site does not offer them at the moment.
From the guide Travel times: how far can you get in 10, 20 or 30 minutes?
Shopping
Can I use Shopping on my phone?
Yes. The store prices fit a phone screen two cards across, and Go to opens the store's own site, where you can buy in its app or its mobile pages.
Does 4Search ever sell products or take my payment details?
No. Shopping only finds and compares offers. You never enter payment or delivery details on 4Search; you do that on the store's site, under the store's terms.
Is anything in Shopping an ad?
Results are ordered by how well they match your search and by price, never by payment. Sponsored placements, if ever shown, are labeled "Ad" or "Sponsored". Some store links can earn a commission, as the line beside them says. See Store links and commissions.
Do I pay more when I buy through a link?
No. A commission, when there is one, comes out of the store's side, and the price you pay is the store's normal price.
From the guide Store links and commissions
Are the results sorted by who pays most?
No. The order is by how well a product matches your search, and then by price. Commissions play no part.
From the guide Store links and commissions
Which links earn a commission?
It depends on the store; not every store has an affiliate program, and some links earn nothing. The commission line appears beside all store links, so you are always told it may apply.
From the guide Store links and commissions
Does the link put a tracking cookie on my computer?
Not from 4Search: the click is recorded without a cookie or other identifier. Once you arrive, the store's own site follows its own privacy rules and cookies.
From the guide Store links and commissions
Is Shopping free?
Yes. Searching and comparing are free, and buying through a link costs you nothing extra.
From the guide Shopping: compare store prices in one search
Can I buy something on 4Search?
No. 4Search never takes payment or an order. Go to opens the store's own page, and you buy there.
From the guide Shopping: compare store prices in one search
Who do I contact about an order?
The store you bought from. 4Search is not part of the sale and cannot see or change orders.
From the guide Shopping: compare store prices in one search
Why does my search show only articles and a link to Amazon?
You are on a site of the 4 Network that does not compare store prices. Store prices are on 4Search's Shopping tab.
From the guide Shopping: compare store prices in one search
Does Shopping include tax?
No. Prices are as the store lists them, before tax, which depends on where you live.
From the guide How fresh the prices are, and what to do when a store's price differs
Why does a card say "out of stock online"?
The store lists the product but says it cannot ship it now. It may be available in its stores, or come back later.
From the guide How fresh the prices are, and what to do when a store's price differs
How do I get the newest prices?
Search again, or reload the product's comparison page, which checks the stores each time it opens.
From the guide How fresh the prices are, and what to do when a store's price differs
Does Shopping track price drops?
No. There is no price history and no alerts: Shopping shows the offers available now.
From the guide How fresh the prices are, and what to do when a store's price differs
Why do some products have no Compare link?
A product gets a comparison page when Shopping can match it across stores, by its barcode or its brand and model, or when its barcode lets Shopping ask the stores for it. A product found at one store only, with no barcode, has none; its Go to button takes you to the store.
From the guide A product's prices at each store
Why does the table say "No store has this product listed right now"?
None of the stores answered with an offer for it this time, perhaps because it sold out or was taken off sale. Prices are checked again each time the page opens, so try later.
From the guide A product's prices at each store
Why does one store appear twice?
A store can sell the same product both new and refurbished (or used); each condition gets its own row.
From the guide A product's prices at each store
Is there a price history or a price alert?
No. The page shows today's offers only.
From the guide A product's prices at each store
Why are the same headphones on two cards?
Shopping puts offers together when it can tell they are the same product, by its barcode or its brand and model number. When stores describe a product differently, it can appear twice. The comparison page of each card shows what each store offers.
From the guide Search Shopping and read the results
Why is the shipping "not given"?
Many stores show shipping only at checkout, or it depends on your address. Shopping does not guess. Check on the store's site before you buy.
From the guide Search Shopping and read the results
Why is a price in the results different from the store's site?
Prices change, sometimes several times a day. The card says when the price was checked; the store's price at checkout is the one that applies. See How fresh the prices are.
From the guide Search Shopping and read the results
How many results do I get?
Up to 48 products per search, best matches first.
From the guide Search Shopping and read the results
Does Lowest price include shipping?
Yes, when the store gives a shipping price. When it says Shipping not given, only the item's price is counted, so check the store before you decide.
From the guide Sort and narrow the Shopping results
Why does an item with no condition shown appear under New only?
When a store does not say what condition an item is in, Shopping treats it as new, which is how most stores list new stock. The store's page has the details.
From the guide Sort and narrow the Shopping results
Can I filter by brand or by store?
Not with a control. Add the brand to your search words (sony headphones). The comparison page of a product lists every store's offer.
From the guide Sort and narrow the Shopping results
Why is my favorite store missing from the results?
It may not have been asked for this search, because your words did not match what it sells; it may not have answered in time; or it may not be one of the stores Shopping can check. Try more specific words, or search again later.
From the guide Which stores Shopping checks, including specialty stores
Can I choose which stores to search?
No. Shopping picks the stores for each search from your words. To compare one product across stores, use its Compare page.
From the guide Which stores Shopping checks, including specialty stores
Are specialty stores trustworthy?
They are shops and makers selling under their own names, but Shopping does not vouch for any seller. Check the store's reviews, shipping and return terms before you buy, as you would with any shop you do not know.
From the guide Which stores Shopping checks, including specialty stores
Personalize
What is the difference between a theme and Saved preferences?
The theme is a display setting. It stays in your browser without any permission from you. Saved preferences is a privacy choice that lets the site keep the lists and places you save, such as followed stocks. It is off until you switch it on, and turning it off deletes what it kept. See Choose Hybrid, Light or Dark and Saved preferences.
Can I back up the things I follow?
There is no backup or sync, because there are no accounts. Your lists live in the browser where you made them. Saved map places can be downloaded from the Saved view in Maps. For everything else, write down what you want to keep, or follow it again on the new device.
Can I use the installed app without an internet connection?
No. The icon opens the website, and 4Search does not store pages on your device for offline use. See Install 4Search as an app.
Why do my settings differ between two 4Search sites?
Each site in the 4 Network is a separate website with its own saved data. Your theme, privacy choices and lists on one site do not appear on another. See Make 4Search yours.
How do I stop following something?
Select the Following button again, or use the stop option on your list page. The item leaves your list at once.
From the guide Follow stocks, topics, places and more
How many things can I follow?
The limit depends on the service: 50 stocks, 60 Politics items, 100 prediction markets, 30 weather places, 50 topics and 500 saved map places.
From the guide Follow stocks, topics, places and more
Why is there no Follow button where I expected one?
Following is offered on the sites that have the service, and only where an item can be followed. A site without Finance, for example, has no watchlist. If the buttons are missing on a site that has the service, see My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered.
From the guide Follow stocks, topics, places and more
Does 4Search keep a copy of my list?
No. Your list is kept in your browser, not on 4Search's servers and not in an account. Some pages send it along with the request that draws the page, as explained in Saved preferences.
From the guide Follow stocks, topics, places and more
Can I set a home place outside the United States?
Yes, for any place that has a Weather page. Search for a city with its country, such as Paris, France, then select Set as home.
From the guide Set a home place and choose your units
Does my home place follow me to my phone?
No. It is kept in the browser where you set it. Set it again on your phone.
From the guide Set a home place and choose your units
Why does Weather still open on the general overview?
No home place is set in this browser. Either you have not set one, you cleared site data, or Saved preferences was turned off, which removes it. See Location not found, or the wrong place.
From the guide Set a home place and choose your units
Does choosing °C change Maps too?
No. Each service has its own units choice: Weather uses °F or °C, Maps uses miles or kilometers, and Predictions has its own odds format.
From the guide Set a home place and choose your units
Is this a real app from an app store?
No. It is the 4Search website added to your home screen. It opens in its own window and updates whenever the site does.
From the guide Install 4Search as an app
I do not see an Install button. Why?
The buttons are in the Menu and in the footer. If you do not see them, the site you are on may not show them. Use your browser's own menu and look for Install or Add to Home screen.
From the guide Install 4Search as an app
Does installing give 4Search more access to my phone?
The icon only opens the website. 4Search asks for things such as your location only when you use a feature that needs it, such as Use my location in Weather, and your browser asks your permission first.
From the guide Install 4Search as an app
Can I install more than one 4Search site?
Yes. Each site in the 4 Network installs as its own icon with its own name.
From the guide Install 4Search as an app
Do I need an account to personalize 4Search?
No. 4Search has no sign-in for visitors. Your settings are kept in your browser, not in an account.
From the guide Make 4Search yours
Will my settings follow me to my phone or another computer?
No. They stay in the browser where you made them. To get the same setup somewhere else, set it up there too.
From the guide Make 4Search yours
Why does 4Search ask about cookies when I follow something?
Because the list has to be saved somewhere. It is saved in your browser, and the browser keeps it only if the Saved preferences choice is on. The box that appears turns that choice on for you if you agree. See Saved preferences.
From the guide Make 4Search yours
Is Saved preferences required?
No. It is optional and off until you switch it on. You can use 4Search without it. You cannot keep lists or a home place.
From the guide Saved preferences, the choice that lets 4Search remember your lists
Does turning it on create an account or a profile?
No. It lets your own browser keep the items you save. The Cookie Policy describes them as not tied to an account and not stored on 4Search's servers. Some pages send the list along with the request that draws the page, as the table above shows.
From the guide Saved preferences, the choice that lets 4Search remember your lists
I followed a stock and it disappeared. Why?
Most often the site's data was cleared, Saved preferences was turned off, or you are in another browser or a private window. See My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered.
From the guide Saved preferences, the choice that lets 4Search remember your lists
Can I move my lists to a new device?
There is no export or sync, because there is no account. Follow the items again on the new device. Saved map places can be downloaded from the Saved view in Maps.
From the guide Saved preferences, the choice that lets 4Search remember your lists
Is the theme a saved preference?
No. The theme is a display setting that stays in your browser without this choice. See Choose Hybrid, Light or Dark.
From the guide Saved preferences, the choice that lets 4Search remember your lists
Does 4Search follow my phone's dark mode setting?
No. The theme changes only when you change it with the button or the footer chooser.
From the guide Choose Hybrid, Light or Dark
Why did my theme go back to Hybrid?
The browser forgot the choice. That happens when site data is cleared, when you use a private window, or when you open the site in a different browser. Choose your theme again. See My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered.
From the guide Choose Hybrid, Light or Dark
Is the theme saved in an account?
No. There are no accounts. It is saved in your browser only.
From the guide Choose Hybrid, Light or Dark
The header button shows a different word than I expected. What does it mean?
The word is the theme you are in now, not the one you will get. Selecting the button moves to the next theme.
From the guide Choose Hybrid, Light or Dark
Privacy and your data
Does 4Search use cookies?
A few. Your privacy choices, your theme and a few display settings are kept in your browser's storage. A short-lived session cookie protects forms and records a completed human check. If you turn on Saved preferences, the lists, places and settings you save are kept too, including two small Weather cookies. Google may set its own when its results load. See What stays in your browser, and how to clear it.
Does 4Search show ads?
That depends on the site. A site that shows Google display ads labels them Advertisements and keeps them non-personalized unless you allow personalization. Other sites show none. Shopping pages contain affiliate links, which the pages disclose. See Advertising and affiliate links.
How can I see what 4Search holds about me?
You do not sign in, so there is no account to look through. You can see what your browser holds in its own site data settings. For the records the site keeps, send a privacy request and choose Access or know. See Make a privacy request.
Can my child use 4Search?
The Terms of Use say you must be at least 13 years old, and that a younger person should not use the site or send personal information through it. See Children's privacy.
Are the Help pages the same as the policies?
No. Help explains the policies in plain words. The policy pages are the legal text, and they are the ones that count. See Where to find each policy.
Why does the privacy banner show again on another 4Search site?
Choices are kept per site and per browser. Each site in the 4 Network asks once and remembers separately. See Your privacy choices.
Does 4Search track me?
Not in the way many sites do, and the details are in the Privacy Policy. No account is needed, and the policy says 4Search does not use your searches to build a profile of you or sell personal information for money. It does keep limited technical records, such as your IP address and what was requested, to run and protect the site and to count visits in aggregate. Optional features start off: AI answers, advertising and Saved preferences. 4Search honors Global Privacy Control. Google receives your search when its web results load, and an AI provider receives it only if you allow AI answers. See Privacy and your data.
What happens if I reject everything that is optional?
Searching, tabs, filters and topics keep working, and so do the Google-hosted web results, which the policies treat as an essential part of search. AI answers, Saved preferences and advertising stay off. You can change your mind at any time.
How do I change my privacy choices later?
Open Menu › Your Privacy Choices, or Your Privacy Choices in the footer, then select Open Privacy Choices. See Your Privacy Choices.
Why am I seeing ads?
The site you are on shows Google display ads. They are labeled Advertisements, and without your permission they are not personalized. Switch off personalization with the Personalized advertising switch or with Global Privacy Control.
From the guide Advertising and affiliate links
I see no ads. Is the Advertising switch doing anything?
On a site without display ads, the switch controls whether advertising technologies that measure or personalize ads may be used. It stays off until you turn it on.
From the guide Advertising and affiliate links
Does a commission change what I pay?
No. The disclosure says an affiliate commission comes at no additional cost to you.
From the guide Advertising and affiliate links
Does a store pay to rank higher?
Not according to the disclosure: Shopping results are ordered by match to your search and by price, never by the commission a store pays.
From the guide Advertising and affiliate links
Does 4Search store what I ask the AI?
AI Mode chats live in your browser session. The site may keep an operational log of each message you send in AI Mode. AI Overview answers are not cached by default. The AI Transparency Notice has the exact wording.
From the guide How AI answers use your question
Who sees my question?
If you allow AI answers, the AI provider named in the AI Transparency Notice receives it, along with the context described above. If you do not, nothing is sent.
From the guide How AI answers use your question
Can I use 4Search without AI?
Yes. The normal search results are always there. AI-assisted answers are an extra you turn on.
From the guide How AI answers use your question
How do I turn AI off again?
Open the privacy panel, switch AI-assisted answers off and select Save choices.
From the guide How AI answers use your question
What is the minimum age to use 4Search?
The Terms of Use say you must be at least 13. Younger people should not use it or send personal information through it.
From the guide Children's privacy
Does 4Search build advertising profiles of children?
The Children's Privacy Notice says the application does not create individual advertising profiles or browser fingerprints.
From the guide Children's privacy
How does a parent ask for a child's information to be deleted?
Use the Privacy Request Form, choose Deletion and state that the request concerns a child.
From the guide Children's privacy
Does GPC stop all tracking?
It tells 4Search not to sell or share your data and keeps advertising choices off in that browser. It does not change the essential processing that search needs, such as Google returning web results, or the technical records described in What 4Search collects, and what it does not.
From the guide Global Privacy Control
Why is the Advertising switch greyed out?
Your browser is sending Global Privacy Control, and 4Search honors it. The note under the switch says so. Turn the signal off in your browser if you want to choose for yourself.
From the guide Global Privacy Control
Does 4Search honor Do Not Track?
Not as an opt-out. The policy says Do Not Track does not communicate a standardized legal choice. Use Global Privacy Control or the privacy panel instead.
From the guide Global Privacy Control
Does Google see everything I search on 4Search?
Google receives your search on the pages that load Google-hosted results, as described above. The Images, Videos, Finance, Politics, Predictions, Weather and Maps pages do not load them.
From the guide Google search results and your privacy
Can I stop Google from getting my search?
Not on the pages that load Google's results, because those results are an essential part of the search. You can use the pages that do not load them.
From the guide Google search results and your privacy
Does rejecting cookies stop Google results?
No. Google search results stay active when you reject the optional categories.
From the guide Google search results and your privacy
Who runs 4Search?
The policies name 4Internet, LLC as the company responsible for the sites in the 4Search network, and give its postal address and a privacy contact.
From the guide Privacy and your data at a glance
Does 4Search sell my data?
The Privacy Policy says it does not sell personal information for monetary consideration, and that it does not authorize cross-context behavioral advertising unless you have made an affirmative choice and the law permits it. Read section 5 of the policy for the full wording.
From the guide Privacy and your data at a glance
Is my search history saved to an account?
There are no accounts for visitors, so there is no search history attached to one. The site does record technical request information, described in What 4Search collects, and what it does not.
From the guide Privacy and your data at a glance
Which policy should I read first?
Start with the Privacy Policy. The Cookie Policy explains what your browser stores, and Your Privacy Choices holds the controls. See Where to find each policy.

From the guide Where to find each policy
Where do I report a security problem?
The Security page says to use the Contact page and begin your message with SECURITY REPORT, with the address of the page, a short description, the steps to reproduce it and its potential impact.
From the guide Where to find each policy
Where do I report an accessibility barrier?
Use the Accessibility page's link to the Contact page, which selects the accessibility topic for you. Say which page and feature, what the barrier is and what browser or assistive technology you use.
From the guide Where to find each policy
How do I delete my data from 4Search?
Clear your browser data for what is on your device, as in What stays in your browser, and how to clear it. For what the site keeps on its side, send a privacy request and choose Deletion.
From the guide Make a privacy request
How long does a privacy request take?
The policy says the site responds within the period the law requires, ordinarily 45 days, subject to a permitted extension.
From the guide Make a privacy request
Do I need an account to make a request?
No. You enter a name and an email address in the form. The site may ask for more information to verify the request.
From the guide Make a privacy request
What if I only have a general question about privacy?
The policy says questions that do not involve a rights request can go through the Contact page.
From the guide Make a privacy request
Does 4Search know who I am when I search?
You do not sign in, so a search is not tied to an account. The site does record technical information such as the IP address with each request, for the purposes listed above.
From the guide What 4Search collects, and what it does not
Are my health searches treated differently?
They are processed like other searches, and the policy says they are not used to build profiles. A separate notice, the Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy, describes your rights. See the link above.
From the guide What 4Search collects, and what it does not
How can I find out if the site holds something about me?
Use the Privacy Request Form and choose Access or know. See Make a privacy request.
From the guide What 4Search collects, and what it does not
How do I delete everything 4Search has stored on my device?
Clear this site's cookies and site data in your browser, as in the steps above. To clear only the saved lists and places, switch off Saved preferences from the privacy panel.
From the guide What stays in your browser, and how to clear it
Does 4Search store my searches in my browser?
Not as a history. A few things are kept for a moment while you use the site, such as the AI Mode chat for the life of the tab, and your last dozen Maps searches if you have turned on Saved preferences.
From the guide What stays in your browser, and how to clear it
Will clearing my cookies log me out?
There is nothing to log out of. You will see the privacy banner again and your theme and lists will be reset.
From the guide What stays in your browser, and how to clear it
Why does the site forget everything in a private window?
Private windows discard site data when they close, and some block storage. See My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered.
From the guide What stays in your browser, and how to clear it
Do I have to accept anything to use 4Search?
No. Reject non-essential keeps only the two always-active categories, and search still works.
From the guide Your privacy choices
What is the difference between Allow All and Save choices?
Allow All turns on every optional category in one step. Save choices keeps exactly the switches you set in the panel.
From the guide Your privacy choices
Where did the shield button go?
It appears only after you have made a choice. Until then the banner is on the page instead. If you do not see it, use the Menu or the footer link Your Privacy Choices.
From the guide Your privacy choices
Why does the banner keep coming back?
The browser is not keeping the choice. That happens when site data is cleared, in some private windows, or when the browser blocks site storage. See My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered.
From the guide Your privacy choices
Can I change my choice after I clicked Allow All?
Yes, at any time. Open the panel and switch any category off. See the steps above.

Do I need to install anything to use Maps or Weather radar?
No. They run in the browser. Maps draws its map with WebGL, which current browsers include.
From the guide Browsers and devices
Why does 4Search forget my theme or my followed topics?
Your browser may be blocking storage, or you may be using a private window that clears it when you close it. Saved preferences also has to be turned on for lists. See Saved preferences.

Is any of this live?
Nothing is guaranteed to be instant. Each service copies or reads its sources on its own schedule, and most figures show their age. Use the official source when timing matters.
From the guide Where the information comes from
Does 4Search change what the sources say?
No. Forecasts, records, odds and prices are shown as the sources give them. 4Search converts units, works out a few figures of its own (such as a member's votes with their party) and labels them.

Troubleshooting
Something is not working. Where do I start?
Reload the page and read any message on it. Then find what you see in Troubleshooting, which lists the common problems and their fixes. If nothing helps, use How to reach us.
Why am I asked to confirm I am human?
The site could not tell whether your browser or connection is a person or automated software, so it asks you to press and hold a button for a few seconds. See The "Please confirm you are human" check.
Do I need to turn off my ad blocker to use 4Search?
No, but a blocker can stop Google's web results from loading, and the page tells you when that happens. See Google web results are blank or will not load.
Why does the AI Overview ask for permission every time?
It should ask only until you allow AI answers. If it keeps asking, your browser is not keeping the choice. See My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered.
From the guide The AI answer is missing
I allowed AI answers but still see nothing.
Wait a few seconds: the answer loads after the page. If an error message appears, use the table above. If the human check appears, complete it.
From the guide The AI answer is missing
Can I get an AI answer on a site that says it is not configured?
No. On that site AI answers are not turned on. The regular search works as usual.
From the guide The AI answer is missing
What is the reference code for?
It identifies your message. Quote it if you follow up. It looks like K7QM-3XHP-9RWD.
From the guide How to reach us
Can I report several things at once?
Yes. Tick every topic that fits, or send a separate message for each issue so each gets its own reference.
From the guide How to reach us
Why do I have to type a security code?
It shows the message came from a person. The form calls it a quick security check.
From the guide How to reach us
Where do I send a privacy request?
Not here. Use the Privacy Request Form. See Make a privacy request.
From the guide How to reach us
Why does Finance show yesterday's date?
The market is closed, so the page shows the last close. It labels it At close with the date and time.
From the guide The data looks out of date
Are the prices real time?
No. Finance says prices may be delayed up to 15 minutes.
From the guide The data looks out of date
The weather looks wrong for right now.
Check the "updated" time on the forecast card, and reload. Conditions change faster than a forecast is refreshed. If the time is hours old, tell us.
From the guide The data looks out of date
Why is a news story old?
Search can reach back further than 30 days when there is little recent coverage, and the story's age is shown on it. Choose a shorter period in the date menu to see only recent ones. See No results, or too few results.
From the guide The data looks out of date
Why are the Google results missing but the news results are there?
The two load separately. 4Search's own results come with the page. Google's results arrive from Google afterwards and can be stopped by a blocker or a connection problem.
From the guide Google web results are blank or will not load
Where do Google results appear?
On the All, Web, News, Websites and Shopping results pages. They are not on Images, Videos or the service pages such as Finance and Weather.
From the guide Google web results are blank or will not load
I see "Retry Google Results". What does it do?
It asks the page to load Google's results again. It does not change any privacy choice.
From the guide Google web results are blank or will not load
The Web results never load in my browser but do in another. Why?
An extension or a setting in the first browser is stopping them. Turn off blockers for this site there.
From the guide Google web results are blank or will not load
Am I being accused of being a robot?
No. The check is a precaution when the site cannot tell. A real person completes it in a few seconds.
From the guide The "Please confirm you are human" check
How long do I hold the button?
The box says: it names the number of seconds. Keep holding until the button reports that the check is complete.
From the guide The "Please confirm you are human" check
Does the check collect anything about me?
The Cookie Policy says a successful check stores only the remaining allowance, an expiration time and a one-way digest of your browser's identification in your session on the site. See What 4Search collects, and what it does not.
From the guide The "Please confirm you are human" check
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. Focus the button and hold Space or Enter.
From the guide The "Please confirm you are human" check
Why does the weather show a place I am not in?
The overview shows your home place, or, without one, may show the weather near the approximate location your network connection suggests. Search for your own place and select Set as home.
From the guide Location not found, or the wrong place
Does 4Search keep my location?
According to the Privacy Policy, the position you share is used for the lookup and is not kept.
From the guide Location not found, or the wrong place
My ZIP code is not found.
Check the digits. For a place outside the United States, search by city and country instead.
From the guide Location not found, or the wrong place
Why does a nonsense search still show news results?
In the default Title & Body (Meaning) mode, 4Search returns the stories closest in meaning even when no words match. If you want results that contain your words, choose a Text option.
From the guide No results, or too few results
What does "Auto (180 days)" mean?
Auto looked at the last 30 days, found too little on your subject and widened the period to 180 days. The label tells you the period it used.
From the guide No results, or too few results
Why is the News column empty but the page has buttons?
Nothing matched under the settings you chose. Switch the match menu to Title & Body (Meaning), widen the date window or remove a filter.
From the guide No results, or too few results
I still find nothing. What now?
Tell us the search, the tab and the filters you used, through the Contact page. See How to reach us.
From the guide No results, or too few results
Where do I report a bug?
Use the Contact page and say which page, what you did, what you expected and what happened. See How to reach us.
From the guide Troubleshooting
My problem is with a store, a price or a link on another website.
4Search links to other sites and does not control them. Contact the store or site directly. For a wrong price or listing on a 4Search Shopping page, tell us which store and product, and when you saw it.
From the guide Troubleshooting
Is my internet connection the problem?
No. The notice comes from the site, and it appears even when your connection is fine.
From the guide A service says it is being set up
How long does it take?
The page says a few minutes. If it lasts much longer, contact us.
From the guide A service says it is being set up
Will my followed places and saved map places still be there?
Yes. They are stored in your browser and are not touched while a service is getting ready.
From the guide A service says it is being set up
Why does one site have Finance and another does not?
Each site in the network has its own set of services. The footer shows the family of sites, and each service's overview says where it runs.
From the guide A service is missing on this site
I saw a tab yesterday and it is gone.
Check that you are on the same site: look at the address. If you are, tell us, with the address of the page. See How to reach us.
From the guide A service is missing on this site
Does a missing tab mean the site is down?
No. A site that is down does not load at all. A missing tab means that site has no such service.
From the guide A service is missing on this site
Why does 4Search ask me about cookies every time?
The browser forgot your choice. Private windows, automatic clearing and blocked storage cause that. See the table above.
From the guide My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered
I turned Saved preferences back on. Where is my list?
Turning Saved preferences off deletes what it kept, and turning it on again does not bring it back. Follow the items again.
From the guide My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered
Can I recover a list I lost?
No. There is no copy on 4Search's side, because lists are kept only in your browser. Saved map places can be downloaded from the Saved view in Maps if you made a download earlier.
From the guide My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered
My lists are fine, but the page looks different.
Check the theme button at the top right. The theme is separate from your lists.
From the guide My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered
Will I lose my followed items if a page fails to load?
No. Your list is kept in your browser, and the message says it could not be loaded just now, not that it is gone.
From the guide A page is slow or will not load
The map is blank but the rest of the page works. Why?
The map is drawn by your browser using WebGL. If WebGL is off or not supported, the map area says so and the rest of the page still works.
From the guide A page is slow or will not load
The AI box keeps shimmering.
Wait a few more seconds. If it never finishes, reload, or see The AI answer is missing.
From the guide A page is slow or will not load
Why did my search open News when I typed it on the All tab?
4Search chose News because the search looked like a news subject, and it said so under the tabs. Select See all results instead, or open the tab you want yourself.
From the guide Results are not what I expected
How do I stop 4Search choosing a tab for me?
Start your search on the tab you want, such as Web or News. When it does choose, See all results instead undoes it for that search.
From the guide Results are not what I expected
Why do I get stories that do not contain my words?
Meaning matching returns stories close in meaning. Choose a Text option in the match menu for results that contain your words.
